Genre study - Semester Project

 

Requirements:  2 pages typed, double-spaced, 12 point type

          SEMESTER PROJECT due date May 13  

Students must create a PUBLISHABLE REVIEW of the book that they felt most strongly about - whether they loved it or hated it!  It is a publishable review though, so it must be professional!  It may be presented in the traditional book review format, or students may be more creative (a book jacket, a poster, a newscast, an advertisement) - just check with the teacher before finishing the project of it is not listed here.

 

  BOOK REVIEW

  This should be a persuasive endevour to encourage others to read the book you are reviewing.  You should include information about the following:

  • Major characters in the story
  • Enough of the plot to get readers interested
  • Information about the author, background, favorite genre, other books they have written (especially if they have written a series).
  • Your recommendation as to why the book you chose should be the reader's next pick.

 OR

AUTHOR STUDY

Students are to choose an author that they wish to study for the semester project. You must have already read at least one book by this author for the commentary portion of the assignment. The author study

assignment is to be presented in a paper folder.  You may use folded construction paper - don't go out and buy something!

 

Students are encouraged to use their creativity in the presentation of their material. Information about the author that must be included:

·         Personal data- such as birth/ death dates, family history, background

·         Professional history - where the author went to college, previous writing jobs, how they got into novel writing, etc.

·         Author's style - information about the genre(s) the author chooses to write in, as well as information about their unique style. *HINT* Link the use of literary elements to the author's style.

·         What information in the author's life has links to their literary subject- matter. Where might their ideas for novel's come from?

·         List the books that this author has written on the back of the folder.

·         Write a commentary on a book that you have read by this author. Be sure to include why you chose to read the book, comments by friends about it, and your personal description and comments on the book.

·         Include a picture of the author on the front cover, the author's name, your name and class period.

GENRE STUDY INSTRUCTIONS

 

GO TO THE LA DOCUMENTS FOLDER FOR GENRE SHEETS!  (make sure you print

the correct form - there is a different one for TAG)

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Summary – write a brief summary of the novel

 

Quote - find a quote of great importance to the novel and explain why it is important (examples: relates to the theme; sets the tone; defines the main character / problem…); make sure to include the page number!

 

Illustration – draw a picture of a scene or character from the story; make sure to include the page number(s) where you found the description.

 

Theme – the author’s message; this is a big idea about life in general (examples: good always triumphs over evil; courage is found when you truly need it; innocence deserves to be protected)

 

Recommendation – your feelings about the book in two to three sentences.

 

Historian – find out what was going on when the book was written, or what influenced the author to write this novel.

 

Imagery – 5 phrases from the story that make you feel like you are there, detailed, vivd description (make sure to include page numbers); you may draw little pictures to accompany the phrases if you like.

 

Character Sketch – descriptions of the main character using the methods of characterization notes from spiral, or p. R7-8 in the glossary of your Language of Literature book.  Find an example for each one. How does the character look, feel, what does he say, how do others descibe him/her. Inference may be used to determine character.

 

Key Words – 5 words that you had to learn* while reading the novel because they were KEY to understanding the plot, theme or characters; define the word, give the page number and explain why it is so important.  

*If you didn’t have to learn any new words because you are super smart (yup, it happens!), then find 5 words of great importance to the story.

Literary Awards

 

Lone Star Reading List – The Texas Lone Star Reading List is a recommended reading lists developed by public and school librarians from the Yung Adult Round Table.  The purpose of the list is to encourage students in grades 6, 7, and 8 to explore a variety of books.  Twenty books are chosen each school year.

 

Newbery Medal Winners – The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division on the American Library Association, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.  One book is chosen each year.
