Stu       Students will:  Republic of Texas: 1) Preview: Would you ever run for a political office?  Why do you think Texans favored Sam Houston as their 1st president of The Republic of Texas?

NOT Notes:  Problems in New Republic: 1) Mexican government refused to recognize Texas’s independence, 2) so, war between Mexico and Texas still existed, 3) financial problems-debt from the revolution, no money to repay, 4) Native Texans resenting increased population of settlers, threat of war, 5) army problems-Felix Huston (war hawk) vs. Sam Houston, 6) 1st attempt at “annexation-admission to the union” failed due to issue of slavery. John Quincy Adams, former President of the U.S., blocked passage of the bill to annex. He did not want any more states in the union that supported slavery. This would upset the balance in the U.S. Congress

 

          Sam Houston’s Political Policies: 1) wanted to maintain peace with Mexico, 2) and Native Texans, 3) limit government spending, 4) promote annexation of Texas.

 

          Lamar Wins Election of 1838

         

Process: DRAFT: Write a ½ page paragraph: You’re giving a speech as to why you should be elected The President of The Republic of Texas. However, your speech must be given in the spirit of Sam Houston’s political policies as in the notes. Focus on one issue.

Notes: PROBLEMS Lamar faced in term as president of the Republic of Texas: 1) conflict with Mexico, 2) and Native Texans, 3) growing public debt

 

            Mirabeau Lamar Political Policies: 1) renewed conflict with Mexico, 2) clear Texas of all Native Americans, 3) spent borrowed money military expeditions, 4) wanted Texas to remain independent, 5) and expand Texas’s territory

 

            Santa Fe Expedition: Outcome- 1) wasted money Texas did not have, 2) increased tensions with Mexico, 3) resulted in loss of life

Students will: PREVIEW: How would you have voted on the issue of the annexation of Texas?

 

 

NOTES: Sam Houston as President again: 1) no real political parties, 2) clear division existed between Sam Houston and Mirabeau Lamar supporters, 3) Sam Houston put his plans back in action a) reduce government spending, b) reduce army, 3) eliminate navy.

 

            Mier Expedition: Mar-Dec 1842, caused by Mexican troop raids into San Antonio. Outcome: 1) approximately 176 Texans captured in Mier Mexico, 2) Santa Anna ordered 1 out of every 10 to be executed, 3) each prisoner to select a bean, prisoners who selected a black bean were shot, others placed in prison

 

            The Archives War: Dec 1842; 1) Houston wanted records kept in Washington on the Brazos due to tensions with Mexico and Native Texans, 2) did not want Austin to be capital of Texas, 3) Austin citizens stopped records (archives) being relocated.

 

            Regulator-Moderator War: 1) feud between east Texans, 2) Sam Houston sent troops to east Texas to keep peace

 

            Anson Jones elected president of the Republic of Texas 1844

 

            Texas becomes a state: 1) US Congress approved Feb. 26th, 1845 to accept Texas as 28th state of the union, 2) state constitution ratified Oct. 1845, by Texas voters, 3) state constitution ratified by US Congress Dec. 28th, 1845, 4) Feb. 19th, 1846 President Anson Jones announced the annexation of Texas.
