recognize Texas’s independence, 2) so, war between Mexico and Texas still
existed, 3) financial problems-debt from the revolution, no money to repay,
4) Native Texans resenting increased population of settlers, threat of war,
5) army problems-Felix Huston (war hawk) vs. Sam Houston, 6) 1st
attempt at “annexation-admission to the union” failed due to issue of
slavery. John Quincy Adams, former President of the U.S., blocked
passage of the bill to annex. He did not want any more states in the union
that supported slavery. This would upset the balance in the U.S. Congress
