****Vocabulary words to note since Middle School is a whole new world!!!

~~ADVISORY period is the new word for what we used to call a "homeroom."
~~TEAM is the group of teachers your child is assigned to. They typically
plan lessons together and meet weekly. Each team member has a function.
One will handle scheduling conferences; one will return phone calls, etc.
So sometimes you may hear from a different teacher than whom you originally
contacted, so don't be alarmed if that happens. They all work together for
the benefit of your student.
~~AP: Assistant Principal. Each grade level has their own principal.
Sixth grade is assigned to Ms. Forte for 2008-9 year. Mr. Watson is the
head principal.
Concerns related to your student should first be addressed through your AP
if at all possible as she works closely with the grade level counselors and
teachers.
~~LOCKDOWN (not as scary as it sounds) means students are held in classes to
keep hallways clear. Typically occurs when there is a medical emergency and
a child needs to be escorted to/for medical attention or when a major
maintenance issue happens.
~~LANGUAGE ARTS is what we used to call "English" class in our school days.
~~AR stands for Accelerated Reader. Students have "AR" points that they
earn each six weeks by reading books and taking computerized tests on them.
They earn points based on their score. Students who achieve their AR points
receive rewards and opportunities to attend events.
~~GO GREEN: A program that rewards good behaviors. Students "GO GREEN" by
being nominated and earning it. GO GREEN students receive extra perks and
get to enter the lunchroom early. GO GREEN days are held where students get
to attend special events also.
~~PRO CENTER...your Parent Center located in the back of the front office
area
~~FIVE for the HIVE...Volunteer program at Hopewell for family members.
Also may contribute $5 gift cards as a part of FIVE for the HIVE.
~~ISS: In School Suspension (a discipline program)
~~STAY AWAY: When students have ongoing conflict with one another, they may
request a STAY AWAY agreement where they mutually agree to stay away from
one another for a period of time and staff is made aware of the agreement to
help them follow through with it.
~~TARDY occurs when a student is late to class. There is a tardy policy in
place so students should not accumulate a high number of tardies. This will
be explained in detail to students during the first weeks of school. It is
not enforced during the first weeks so that students may get familiar with
opening lockers, finding classes, etc.
