Assalam Alaikum. I apologize for the long delay since my last note and Insha'Allah I will try to
be more frequent from now on. I know that all the students at ISI are working hard to prepare
for their exams. Masha'Allah I know that most if not all of our ISI parents encourage their
students to work diligently and study well for school and especially for tests. It's important
to remember however that only saying it isn't enough. Parents can also help by providing a quiet
environment, conducive to study. Make sure the TV's off, phone is far away, and that younger
siblings are not playing nearby as these can all be distractions. Also, please encourage your
child to take breaks since studying for long periods at a stretch lowers retention as well as
discourages motivation. The younger your student is, the more frequently they may need to take a
break, even if it's just 1-2 minutes. Keep a glass of water near them for refreshment and try to
avoid caffeine and sugary drinks. And of course, feed their bodies as well as their minds! This
is to time that if you do not already do so, please try to make sure they have a proper,
balanced breakfast in the morning and also that they take a break to eat dinner with the family
in the evening.

Above all else, encourage your child to do their best and praise their efforts. Pressure to "be
the best" can be harmful in the long run and may even hurt the students chances at doing well.
It is not necessary to score 100% but rather to give your 100% effort. Healthy, confident
children will Insha'Allah achieve much more than a student who has perfect grades and low self-
esteem and poor self-image. Use positive reinforcements and positive comments to support your
child. And of course, the winter break period is a great time to relax and reward their efforts!

As always, I am available for any questions or concerns at any time. My office location has
changed! I am now upstairs in room 226 and my door is open to all.

Sr. Sarah Syed Abdul, Counselor's Corner:
Asalam Alaikum. The chilly weather has started to come around the corner and the school year is
well under way, Alhamdulillah. Now that everyone is starting to settle in, the newness that
comes with the beginning of the year is fading away and students and teachers alike are getting
over their initial shyness. Tutoring has begun for students who need help academically
and “warnings” have evolved into consequences for misbehaving. It is important however those
punishments have a purpose.

Teachers often try diverse approaches to helping students understand. Parents can also benefit
from this approach at home. Make sure that the consequence for misbehaving is such that the
child understands not only that they did wrong, but also why this was wrong. Point out
alternatives and help them understand. Also, punishments with the intention only to punish and
not teach, are rarely effective. Ask the child “what do you think you deserve as a consequence?”
You may be surprised at how harshly they think they should be treated! But instead, have
them “undo” their behavior.

A child who is bothering his sister might be punished to help that sister with something
instead. Remind them, “how would you feel?” and also “what if you are only pretending to hit
her, but it actually hurt her?” etc. And consistency is key! I can not stress that enough.
Punishing an action once, and not the next time, undoes what you are trying to teach. Always
make sure that you are consistent and insha’Allah your children will start to remember.

Sr. Sarah Syed Abdul, Counselor's, Corner:
Insha'Allah I hope you are all doing well in health and Iman. It is a joy to see eager and
excited students, ready to learn and happy to be at school. Sometimes however, in their
eagerness and haste, they forget their basic manners that they have been learning at home and at
school since they were very young. Especially when the students are older, it is almost sad to
see how easily they forget to be polite, not only to their elders but even to each other. As
parents and educators, it is necessary for all of us to gently remind our students on an
everyday basis about their manners and their etiquette. Some students Masha'Allah remember to
say "please" and "thank you" to their teachers but not to their classmates. We need to continue
to teach our students every single day that you should not limit your respect to only your
elders but to everyone, even those younger than you. In doing so, you are also showing the
respect that you have for yourself. The few seconds it takes for anyone to say "Jazak Allah
Khair" reflects greatly on their character and makes it easier for others to respect them as
well. Our students need to have this implemented in their daily routine so that it's not only
something they have to do in the classroom, but Insha'Allah becomes a part of their well-
mannered personality! So next time you hear "Can I get more milk?" gently remind your children
to say "please" and to give thanks after they receive it. Also, try to encourage them to not
make demands. No parent should have to hear "I want water! I want water NOW!" Declining demands
until they are appropriately requested will help children to ask politely the first time.
Insha'Allah we can all continue working together to raise well mannered and polite Muslims who
can reflect well on their school, their families, and their communities.

test dates, timing, report dates etc. It also has practice questions at the back. Please review
the booklet and help your student to practice for the test which will be held Saturday, October
18th at 8:00 AM in the school premises. If you have any questions regarding the test please
contact me at your earliest.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER:

Asalam Alaikum Dear Brothers and Sisters,
For those of you whom I have not yet met, my name is Sarah Syed Abdul and in addition to being
the homeroom teacher for the 5th grade, I am also the new school counselor. Insha'Allah please
feel free to stop by and introduce yourself or come to me with any questions or concerns.
Insha'Allah I will be adding a brief note to the weekly reminder from now on. This week as you
know is our school-wide Eid celebration on Thursday. Students are excited to not be in uniform
but to be able to wear their Eid finery and to have a day with special food to eat and games to
play and of course, gifts to exchange. But too often in the halls or at lunch, I'm
overhearing "I hope I get a good gift!" or "I hope I don't get a cheap/$1 gift!" I hope that all
of us as educators and parents can work together to help our children understand the great
blessings they have from Allah (swt) and to appreciate every single one of those blessings, even
if it comes in the form of a low-priced gift.

Alhamdulillah we are extremely fortunate and certainly blessed with an incredible bounty from
Allah (swt) that we are able to feed, clothe, and educate our children in a safe environment. As
we well know, many people around the world and even in our own country and state of Texas are
not able to do the same. Our children (and sometimes even we) need to remember that everything
we have is because Allah (swt) chose to bless us with it, not because we are OWED anything. If
we were not blessed, even if we worked hard to earn, we still may not receive money or we may
lose that money, etc. Do not allow the spirit of Ramadan, the kindness, the charity, we feel for
one month, to only last for 29-30 days. Help your children to keep that alive all year long!
Remind them when they come home Thursday evening to be thankful for any gift they received and
to appreciate the bounty of the food with which they were blessed. Someone took personal time,
effort, and money to purchase those gifts and bring that food. They do not deserve to have their
feelings hurt from rude comments such as "that doesn't taste good" or "that gift is cheap."
Insha'Allah we all can continually work at raising our children in the Sunnah of Rasullah (pbuh)
as kind and generous Muslims....Ameen.
