Dear Fourth Grade Parents,
An information literate student is a student who knows how to learn. Understanding
how to access information and extract what is relevant is a skill all of our
students need. In fourth grade, we begin teaching research skills in earnest
that prepare your child for the work that will be required in school years to
come.
To familiarize your child with a variety of research sources, the teachers and
I have created a game called Research Trivia.
There are six areas with which the students will be working:
-
Books
-
On-line databases
-
Almanacs – print and on-line versions
-
Dictionaries and Thesauri – print
-
Encyclopedias – print version
-
Atlases
Over the course of several weeks, each information source will be introduced
and all students will complete one card with me.
Each topic must be researched using the specified source; therefore, only the
on-line database questions may be answered at home.
All other topics such as books, print encyclopedias, almanacs, dictionaries,
etc. must use books from the JES library.
Each completed index card will have answers to four questions and a
mini-bibliography on the back. As you look over your
child’s work, please check for neat handwriting, correct spelling, and correct
