It’s all you can read! Take as many trips to the buffet as you like!
Dear Parents,
In third and fourth grade, your child will be participating in the JES Reading Buffet program. To become better readers, all students need to practice reading. The classroom teacher needs a way to track the reading that is being done outside of class. This library program was designed to facilitate both of these objectives.
The buffet consists of thousands of books in a wide range of interests and levels of difficulty. Each book has a corresponding computer test and upon passing a test, the student earns points. Points range from 1 to over 20 per book. Third graders are required to read 100 points and fourth graders are required to earn 150 points this year. This will count as a reading grade at the end of the year. The last day to test will be April 30, 2013.
In the JES library, most of the buffet books will be given a special label for easy identification. The books however, do not have to come from the JES library. You may use books from other libraries, books you own, etc. With thousands of titles, it is impossible to have a list of titles. To see if any book has points associated with it, check the Scholastic Reading Counts ecatalog website: http://src.scholastic.com/ecatalog. We like this program because the students are allowed to choose books that interest them at a reading level with which they feel comfortable while practicing their reading skills.
Third and fourth grade students who acquire 150 points or more by the April 30th deadline will be invited to attend the Reading Bash in May. This yearly celebration commemorates the accomplishments of our 3rd & 4th grade students.
While we are very excited about this program, please encourage your child to read any book that interests him or her, whether it has points associated with it or not. The classroom teachers will be reading aloud many books this year that your child will be able to test on for points. Reaching the required number of points should not be a problem.
