Art Program Overview

The Art program at Purple Sage is designed according to the Texas Essential
Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) mandated by the Texas Education Agency.
(http://www.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter117/index.html) In addition to
the TEKS, art lessons are also designed according to the Round Rock ISD ARRC
(Aligned Round Rock Curriculum), and the elements and principles of design.

For our purposes the "ELEMENTS of Art" are: line, shape, color, texture,
value, form, and space. They are the basic building blocks of art.
The "PRINCIPLES of Art" include: contrast, pattern, emphasis, balance,
rhythm, movement, unity, variety, and proportion or scale. The principles
of art occur when elements are combined, repeated, or otherwise relate with
one another. One analogy is to think of the elements like legos, and the
things you can create when you put legos together as the principles.

K-5 students create drawings, paintings, prints, photographs (4th and
5th grades) and sculpture in response to different kinds of visual
problems. We will also be looking at a variety of artists’ works
representing various cultures and a range of art media.
