THE RESULTS FOR THE 2005 PAPER DRIVE ARE IN.....

The Challenge was on for this years paper drive since we would be competing with 700 - 900 schools in both Austin and San Antonio.   We placed third this year and collected $300 for the Green Team.   The Laurel Mountain Community collected 25,509 lbs. of paper in two months!    Great Job!!

For January 2005, the Abitibi Paper Retriever® program collected enough paper products

to equal a herd of 4,360 elephants.

As a result of your paper recycling, enough air pollution was reduced to equal the removal of

8,303 cars from the road for a WEEK!

Enough electricity was saved to power 54,492 homes for a MONTH!

Abitibi's paper recycling efforts removed the equivalent of 1,308 tractor-trailers of paper from landfills.

KEEP UP THE EXCELLENT WORK

How to Have a Green Holiday

As the cool weather sets in and plants and animals begin to go dormant the nation goes into the busiest shopping season. This year enjoy the frenzy while reducing your holiday waste or eliminating it all together.

  • Start by taking your own shopping bag with you to stores or consolidate your purchases into one bag rather than getting a new bag at each store.
  • When decorating your home opt for a tree that can be planted or mulched afterward, or buy an artificial one. Then decorate your tree with custom-made ornaments made from items around the house, or from materials you might find in the backyard: twigs, bark, flowers and herbs, pine cones, etc.
  • Avoid the paper and stamps and wish family, friends and business associates a Happy Holidays through e-cards.
  • When you are “wrapping up” for the holidays create a new twist with old maps, brown paper bags, magazines, newspapers, Sunday comics, or kids’ art work to wrap up that special gift. If you decide to go with traditional wrapping paper look for recycled content gift wrap.
  • Clean up for the holidays is made easy and keeps on recycling with the City of Austin Solid Waste Services curbside tree pick up. Be sure and cut your tree in half if it is taller than six feet.
  • Be prepared for next year by saving this years’ packing material, wrapping paper, and tissue paper to reuse for next year.
  • If after the holidays you find yourself with an assortment of unwanted gifts consider donating them to Keep Austin Beautiful's silent auction by calling 512-391-0622!

Keep Austin Beautiful wishes you an Eco Wise Holiday and thanks you for keeping Austin beautiful.
