Recorder Karate is a fun program to learn how to read lines and spaces of
the musical staff. We earn recorder "Karate Belts" of varying color degrees
by learning to play certain songs of increasing difficulty. My main
objective for students in learning to play recorder is to read the lines and
spaces of a musical staff. Musical literacy goes hand in hand with critical
thinking skills, and supports TAKS skills. As students progress thru belt
levels, they are expected to retain previously learned material. I correlate
this skill with learning new reading or spelling vocabulary. You do not
relearn how to spell words every time you use them.
If your student wishes to purchase the book that we use in class, it is
available on my website either by itself, or with a "play-along" CD. I will
send out orders to New York in late September. Please put the order form
with a check or cash in an envelope clearly marked with your student's name,
homeroom teacher and RECORDER on the front of the envelope.
