Dear Parents,
I would like to welcome your child and family to 2nd Grade at Laurel Mountain
Elementary! I am thrilled to have your child in my classroom. This will be
a year of joyful learning and exciting growth in many areas. I look forward
to partnering with you to create a successful learning community with your
children.
This is my sixth year at Laurel Mountain. I have undergraduate and graduate
degrees in Anthropology and a graduate degree in Community and Regional
Planning all from the University of Texas. I completed my teaching
certification through the state’s Region XIII Education Service Center. I
also worked in education at UT as an undergraduate lab instructor and as a
Student Development Specialist in the Dean’s Office.
When I am not teaching I am spending time with my family. I have been
married for 23 years to my husband, Steve. We have two busy children. Our
son, Spencer, is a senior at Westwood High School where he plays trumpet in
the marching band. As we approach his graduation I am filled with pride
as he has handled with courage and perseverance both dyslexia and
dysgraphia. He is now poised to transition to college with knowledge of his
talents and the strategies to be successful. Spencer and his teachers were
the inspiration for my move into elementary education. It is my goal that
every child in my classroom has the same compassionate care and persistent
efforts to make their educational experience as successful as Spencer’s.
Sarah, our daughter, is in 8th grade at Canyon Vista. She’s an avid reader,
active in student council, participates in Academic UIL, plays golf and
enjoys band. We spend a lot of time outdoors and of course have fun at all
of those sporting and band events!
Second grade is a wonderful time of academic growth and talent development.
As your child’s reading skills take off, they gain the confidence to take
greater risks by using higher order thinking skills to inquire in depth about
what they read. We will also have many adventures as your child makes
discoveries about their world through following their natural curiosity and
using scientific inquiry. While participating in these activities they will
increase their problem solving skills and learn to communicate their thoughts
in a variety of ways. I am dedicated to helping students respect and value
their own and others unique backgrounds and abilities through acceptance and
open sharing of ideas. By offering a variety of activities that draw on
children’s different strengths, I plan to give all students a chance to learn
in a way that best suits them.
I’m looking forward to meeting you at Parent Night. If you have any
questions before then please feel free to contact me at
Sherrie_Rung@roundrockisd.org or at 464-4363.
I believe each child is a unique individual who needs a safe, nurturing and
authentic atmosphere in which to grow and develop emotionally, socially,
intellectually, and physically. It is my desire as an educator to facilitate
learning through collaborating with children, families and my colleagues. I
am dedicated to helping students respect and value their own and others
unique backgrounds and abilities through acceptance and open sharing of
ideas. I passionately desire to make a difference in the lives of young
children.
