What does a school counselor do?
The school counselor supports students, parents, teachers, and staff of a
school. The school counselor provides response services to students in a
time of need so that they can have a more positive educational experience.
The school counselor sometimes provides information to parents, teachers, or
other staff members as they feel they need that information to make their
student/child's school experience more rewarding. The school counselor is
also responsible for leading guidance lessons.
--------------------------------------
What are response services?
Response services are when a child or children come in because an issue has
come up that makes it difficult for the child(ren) function. Sometimes, the
type of response is individual play counseling, art counseling, or talk
counseling. Other times, the appropriate response is group counseling.
--------------------------------------
What is group counseling?
Group counseling is where a group of students are brought together to "work"
on similar issues. Some examples of groups are: Divorce (Banana Splits),
Grief, Social Skills, and Anger Management.
Groups that are formed at Carver are based on the needs of the students.
The
number will be dictated by the counselor's guidance schedule.
--------------------------------------
How long do students receive counseling services?
It depends. Some students will visit once. Others will be seen nearly
every
week.
Groups will usually run for about 6 sessions but that will depend on the
needs of the students as well.
--------------------------------------
What does it mean if my child visits the school counselor?
Most people who see a counselor simply needs to learn some extra tools in
order to deal with the changes that life sends us.
--------------------------------------
How will I know if my child has been seen by the school counselor?
The counselor will contact you either by phone or by a note if the phone
contact could not be made.
--------------------------------------
What is guidance?
"Guidance" is an abbreviated term for guidance lessons which are lessons
that school counselors present to whole classes of students at one time.
Sometimes, your child will say, "I saw the counselor today." and that is the
experience they had.
If your child comes to me for a different reason, I will make every effort
to contact you by phone. If I can't reach you by phone, I will send a note
home.
--------------------------------------
If my child sees the counselor, is he or she in trouble?
Maybe. While it is true, that children are sent to see the counselor when
they have been disruptive, school counselors do not impose punishments. Our
job is to help the child discover why he or she may be acting out (self
awareness) and give them strategies to help cope with the challenges they
may be facing.
