Is there a military obligation if my child enrolls in AFJROTC?

No. We are not an Air Force Recruting Service. Air Force Junior Reserve
Officer Training Corps is a citizenship program.

Does my child have to wear a uniform?

Yes. Cadets are required to wear the Air Force Uniform correctly, TWO days
each week, or as directed.  Wednesday is our AFJROTC uniform wear day;
Fridays are AFJROTC Spirit T-Shirt wear day. Sometimes this changes for
special events.

--------------------------------------

What types of credits are awarded for completing AFJROTC?

Currently, AFJROTC Cadets earn physical education and/or elective credits.
One half credit is earned for each semester (18 weeks).

What kinds of after-school activities are available in AFJROTC?

AFJROTC is more than just an academic class. Like athletics, we have
several opportunities for participation, such as the Drill Team, Color
Guard, Honor Guard, Awareness Presentation Team (public speaking), Rocketry
Team, Aircraft Model & Research Teams, and a physical fitness team. We also
have a Kitty Hawk Chapter (a national honor society).

As a parent, what can I do to support my child in AFJROTC?

We have a AFJROTC Bosters Club that meets each month on the SECOND Tuesday
at 7 pm. The meeting normally lasts aproximately 30-45 minutes. We welcome
your support to the program as we build strong relationships with one
another. Being a parent, BOOSTER will enhance your child's JROTC experience.

Do cadets perform community service?

Yes. We have visited senior citizens, twice collected for the food bank,
assisted in the St. Jude's Childrens Hospital Bike-a-thon, and collected
over $1,000 for the Salvation Army's New York City On-Site Relief Effort and
stuffed toys for Operation Teddy Bear for Caldwell County EMS/Fire. We look
for opportunities to serve the Lockhart community and welcome suggestions
for other community service activities.

What if my child wants to join the military?

Cadets who complete AS-1 and AS-2 may enter the Air Force (and other
branches of service) at paygrade E-2 (Airman). Those who complete AS-1, -2
and -3 may enter the Air Force in paygrade E-3 (Airman First Class). Cadets
should compete for Air Force JROTC college scholarships! Ten percent of
AFROTC college scholarships are set aside for AFJROTC cadets. Cadets should
begin the application process in their junior year. College graduation and
successful completion of AFROTC leads to an officer's commission in the U.S.
Air Force.

What is the AFJROTC Uniform Policy?

The AFJROTC Uniform that will be issued to your cadet is the property of
the US Government. As such, it must be treated with care and respect and
your cadet is expected to wear it properly (Cadet Guide). This wear is a
weekly graded item. It is given the same weight as a TEST GRADE. The
return policy for AFJROTC uniforms is that it must be returned to the place
where it was issued. That place is the AFJROTC office in Bld 500, Room 504.
(The Freshman Campus WILL NOT accept the turn-in of UNIFORM items there.
The office at the high school WILL NOT accept uniform items, either.)

What else should a parent know about AFJROTC?

Primarily, we teach responsibility and hold cadets to Air Force standards of
conduct. This is to prepare your child for the future and enhance their
social skills for after graduation and in accordance with the contract
between the Air Force and the Lockhart Independent School District. We
encourage parents to call us, so together, we can work on individual cadet
needs.

What kind of field trips does AFJROTC take?

First, understand that all field trips are earned by each student. Students
are allowed to attend under the attendance policy of the Lockhart School
District. There are many and varied educational trips. Last year, we
visited Lackland Air Force Base and ran the USAF Confidence Course, and
enjoyed a day on the ropes challenge course at the John Newcomb Ranch in New
Braunfels. During a 2-night trip to Fort Worth, we visited the F-16
production plant, the Museum of Natural Science and the Planetarium, went
bowling as an evening PE activity, and toured the Cavanaugh Aviation Museum
in Arlington, Texas. Another highlight was the NASA visit at Johnson Space
Center in Houston.

What are the requirements for field trips?

Some field trips are offered to all cadets, while other trips are based on
certain requirements. Often, cadets are invited on trips based on
attendance, grades and continued participation in cadet after-school
programs. Many trips are paid for exclusively by the United States Air
Force and the Lockhart School District, and may require that a cadet be a
member of a specific team (e.g., Drill Team, Color Guard, Physical Training
Team, Honor Society, etc.)

Does being assigned to LDMC for poor behavior effect my child in ROTC?

Yes, whereas AFJROTC is a team concept and it involves numerous hours of
practice and practical development exercises such as Drill, Facing
Movements, Marching, Color Guard, etc., all are designed to instill
discipline in cadets. Because they are removed from the general LHS
population and do not get this course of instruction, students in the
AFJROTC Corps of Cadets assigned to LDMC will be immediately removed from
the program. (Additionally, students assigned to LDMC are not authorized to
wear the AFJROTC uniform while on the LDMC campus. This is a weekly test
grade, as is the wear of the AFJROTC Spirit T-Shirt.) Removal from the
program is mandated by a United States Air Force contract with the Lockhart
School District regarding retention, and in Air Force Junior ROTC
Instruction 36-2001, paragraph 2.3, page 10, “Failure to maintain acceptable
Standards or Disciplinary/Behavioral Issues.” It is also imperative that
the school district meet the obligations of its contract with the Commander
of AFJROTC, as specified by Title 10, United States Code, Section 2031. Any
student that is assigned to LDMC or deemed by the Senior Aerospace
Instructor or the Aerospace Instructor to be unfit for the AFJROTC program,
will be removed from AFJROTC.
