The focus for this class is to prepare for the AP Language and Composition
Exam in May. Having said that, the readings focus on the idea of
discovering the American Dream.
* Poetry and Writing Units
- introduce the idea of analysis and argumentation
* Personal Narrative Unit: Exploration of Self
- read variety of personal reflection essays, many recently found on the
AP Exam, later creating your own personal narrative, many found in "One
Hundred Great Essays" or "The Bedford Reader"
* Creating the Dream Unit
- Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter"
- Arthur Miller's "The Crucible"
* Defining the American Dream Unit
- focus will be given to famous 18th, 19th, and 20th century speeches,
essays, and letters
- Patrick Henry, John F. Kennedy, Abraham Lincoln, Queen Elizabeth I,
Martin Luther King, George W. Bush, etc.
* Personalizing the American Dream Unit
- creating current event persuasive speech
* Distorting the Dream Unit
- F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby"
- Arthur Miller's "Death of a Salesman"
