U.S. History
U.S. History traces the emergence and growth of the United States. The
course is organized chronologically, yet it focuses on themes, issues and
questions that have challenged people throughout the century and will
continue to be relevant in the future. Students first reexamine new
frontiers, new industrial strengths, and new resources of the post-Civil War
and Reconstruction period. The course then examines current events during
the 20th century.
Advanced Placement U.S. History
Advanced Placement U.S. History is a full-year college course which covers
the period from the first European explorations of the Americas to the
present. It provides students with a learning experience equivalent to that
obtained in most two-semester college introductory U.S. History courses. It
is designed to help students acquire the analytical skills and factual
knowledge needed to deal critically with a wide range of historical
problems. Students will also learn to assess historical materials-their
relevance to a given issue, their reliability and their importance -and to
weight the evidence and interpretations presented in historical
scholarship. The course will help the student to develop the skills
necessary to arrive at conclusions on the basis of informed judgment and to
present reasons and evidence clearly and persuasively in essay form. At the
conclusion of the course, students will have the opportunity to take the AP
Exam in U.S. History for possible college credit.
