What French courses are offered at Newman Smith High School? Course offerings are French I, French II, French III (weighted credit), and French IV (weighted credit with AP practice). Any student who is interested in the French culture, and who is willing to communicate in class and learn about the French language and its people. Learn French to help you... * fulfill your language requirement. * prepare for the SAT as you understand word relationships and improve your vocabulary. * travel to Canada, France, Belgium, Africa, and even Louisiana.. * be ready for international business opportunities offered right here in the Dallas area. * connect with a culture known for its cuisine, art, fashion, and literature. * speak the language of "love." French classes concentrate on speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Emphasis is placed on oral proficiency (conversation), and practicing vocabulary useful for the everyday situations you would encounter as a visitor to a French-speaking country. Are there opportunities for students outside the classroom atmosphere? All students enrolled in French are eligible to join French Club. Club activities promote an interest in the French language on a more informal basis than the classroom. Movie parties, excursions to French restaurants, and field trips to local museums are typical French Club activities. This past April 2008, our students had the opportunity to be hosts for French-speaking students from Normandy. Then, in June, some of our students traveled to France to take their turn staying with those same students from Normandy. Any other extracurricular opportunities? Students who have an average of 90 or higher for 3 semesters of French are invited to apply for membership in the National French Honor Society. This recognition is impressive on college and scholarship applications. In addition, there are enrichment activities and service opportunities available for members. Active members wear a cord at graduation. |
