Third through fifth grade students at Old Town participate in the Texas Library Association's Bluebonnet Award Program. Every year, the Texas Library Association selects 20 children's books as Bluebonnet Award nominees. A student is eligible to cast a vote for the best book of the year after reading at least 5 Bluebonnet selections. The book with the most votes will be recognized at the Texas Library Association's annual convention in the spring.
Students who take tests over Bluebonnet books and score 80% or better can be recognized. Students may receive an official Texas Bluebonnet Award Certificate with a gold seal, an official Texas Bluebonnet Award (TBA) pencil, a "Bluebonnet Expert" pin, and a Bluebonnet book based on the number of tests taken over Bluebonnet books and the level of accuracy in answering the questions.
5th grade students are eligible for the Susan Symes Bluebonnet Award. They read all 20 of the Bluebonnet books, take an AR test on each (and score their best), and produce a project about one of the Bluebonnet books.
Fifth grade students who read 10 of the Bluebonnet books, read 10 more books from the TBA Readers' Advisory list for the Bluebonnet books, take an AR test over the 10 Bluebonnet books, briefly summarize each of the 20 books read, and produce a project on one of those book are eligible for the Susan Symes Memorial Bluebonnet Award. The award is presented at the end-of-year Reading Awards assembly in May.
The Armadillo Readers' Choice Award book is chosen by the students in Round Rock I.S.D. Ten to twelve outstanding picture books are nominated by the librarians in the district, and a committee of librarians designs activities to enrich the reading experience for students.
The Mockingbird Award is presented to the author/illustrator selected by the K-2 students in the state of Texas. Twenty outstanding books are selected and students vote before May 1 each year.
Kindergarten - 5th grade students can read 6 hours for fun (No assigned reading counts!) and earn a free ticket to a Six Flags theme park. Parents must sign the student reading log form, and students must turn it in to their classroom teacher no later than February 10 (?) 2008. When the tickets arrive in mid-May, we will distribute them to the eligible students. Be on the lookout for forms in Tuesday Folders!
