Kindergarten Information

__________________________________________________________________________
From the Teacher's Desk

I am happy to have your child in kindergarten and look forward to working

with you this year.  I am looking forward to a fun filled year of learning

with your child and it is our goal to provide a secure environment for

him/her to experiment, experience and learn.

Communications

Kindergarten teachers will send out a monthly newsletter to help keep you

informed of past and upcoming events.  You may have questions or concerns

about your kindergartner from time to time.  The main school number is 428-

7600.  Please leave a message if we are having class.  You may also send

notes in the Daily Folder or contact your child’s teacher by email.  Please

check your child's folder daily for notes from your teacher.  We will

schedule a conference for September to discuss your child's progress and to

set academic goals for your child.

Absences

If your child is absent from school, please call the school office at 428-

7607.  Also send a note with the date and reason of the absence in the daily

folder.  If you visit the doctor, and return to school the same day, bring a

note from your doctor and your child will not be counted absent. We will

send it to the office for you.

Daily Folder

Daily Folders should be checked and returned to school everyday.  We will

send all notices; homework and class work in the folder.  Look for a stamp

on the behavior chart and/or a note.  If your child does not receive either

a note or stamp, please call your child's teacher as soon as you can.

School Hours

School begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:45.  The building opens to students at

7:25 a.m. for breakfast.  Kindergarten children arriving from 7:30 to 7:40

will wait in the supervised kindergarten hallway.

Going Home

At Dismissal time, walkers, bike riders, bus riders, daycare riders and car

riders will wait in supervised designated areas.  Always send a note if

there is a change in your child's departure.  You must notify your child's

teacher or the school office.  For your child's protection, we do not

release him or her to go home a different way without a note or phone call

from a parent.  If you pick your child up before 2:45 it is imperative for

you to sign your child out in the office and the office will call the

classroom for your child.

Lunch Accounts

Money may be placed in your child’s account through the cafeteria before

school or on line and is highly recommended to avoid lost lunch money.  You

may add money to the account at any time. The account is used only on the

days your child eats a school lunch.   Please send all money or checks to

school in an envelope labeled with your child's name, teacher's name and

what the money is for on the outside of the envelope.  You may place the

envelope in your child's daily folder and we will send it to the cafeteria.

Look for meal prices on our web page: http://209.184.141.5/oldtown/parents.html

Recess/Water Bottles

We have recess daily.  Your child may bring a labeled water bottle to have

at recess. It will be sent home everyday to be washed and refilled.

Homework

Old Town policy states that kindergartners will have 20 minutes of homework

at least 3 times per week.  We recommend reading aloud to your child 15

minutes every night as part of his/her homework.  Homework assignments will

be sent home on Friday to be completed during the week.  All homework is due

the following Friday.

Snack Time

Snack time consists of crackers, pretzels, cookies, etc. sent by you.
Please send a box or bag of individually wrapped snacks at the beginning
of each month.  We welcome homemade snacks and fresh fruit. We can share
a small snack
inexpensively each day.  We store these and use them as needed.

Parent Volunteers

We welcome volunteers in. kindergarten.  We encourage parents to volunteer.

There are many opportunities for helping out.  We need volunteers to help

monitor students during class work while the teacher works with students one

on one and small groups, assist students during work time, help with special

events and field trips, and help with class preparations.  We also have

Cooking Fridays in the fall, Science Experiment Fridays in the spring and

Guest Reader Wednesdays all year long.  Look for a sign up sheet in the

classroom or in the Daily Folder.

Cooking Fridays in the Fall

We love to cook but need your help.  We will need you to sign up to cook and

take the recipe with you.  You will need to bring the ingredients and any

special equipment needed for the recipe.  Please be prepared to set up and

clean up.  Look for a sign up sheet in the classroom or in the Daily Folder.

Guest Reader Wednesdays

We love to have parents read to us.  We will only need 15 minutes of your

time for this job.  You may bring your child’s favorite book or check out a

book from the library.  Have two or three questions prepared that ask who,

what, when, where or why.  Check our calendar to tie into themes.  Look for

a sign up sheet in the classroom or in the Daily folder.

Science Fridays in the Spring

We have selected science experiments to enrich our program.  We need you to

help us.  Just sign up for a time and take the directions.  You will need to

bring the supplies and any special equipment needed for the experiment.  Let

your child’s teacher know ahead of time if students need to bring certain

supplies.  Please be prepared to set up and clean up.  Look for a sign up

sheet in the classroom or in the daily folder.

Computer Lab

Old Town has a computer lab with a set of Dell computers where each student

can learn, practice and produce.  We will experience MSWord, The Internet,

and Kidspiration. This is also a volunteer opportunity.  If you can help out

please let your child’s teacher know.

Change of Clothing

Please keep a complete change of clothing in a plastic bag in your child's

backpack.  You may want to include a windbreaker jacket or light sweater in

your child's backpack because temperatures in the school building can be

cool for some children.  Label all take-off clothing, lunchboxes, books and

special items with a permanent marker.

Rest Time

Rest time is a time to get refreshed and rested for the rest of the day.

You may send a beach towel or small blanket in a durable bag with a handle

to hang on his/her hook during the week.  We will send it home on Friday to

be washed.  Please send items your child can manage on his/her own and will

fit into his/her backpack.  No plastic mats.  Label everything.

Old Town Colors

Our school colors are red, white and blue.  Please encourage your child to

wear these colors on Fridays.  PTA sells an Old Town t-shirt that you may

wish to purchase.

Visiting School

Although parents are welcome in our classrooms, please give us a few weeks

to adjust. We urge you to come by and see us in action, but please remember

that frequent or lengthy visits can disrupt the class.  A 15 or 20 minute

visit and lunch with your child has worked well in the past.  We do have to

turn in a lunch count by 8:10 each morning, which includes the number of

visitors who will buy a school lunch.   Please notify the office or your

child’s teacher.

Saturday Field Trips

We will offer several field trip opportunities through out the year for

families to attend.  These are not mandatory but we strongly encourage

everyone to participate.  We will view the bats under McNeil Bridge, go to

story time at Barnes and Noble, and go to the Wildflower center.

Birthdays

We really like to celebrate birthdays in kindergarten.  You may help your

child celebrate your child's birthday by bringing a small treat to school on

or near your child's special day.  Cookies or Popsicles are easy treats to

distribute and are well liked by everyone.  If your child has a birthday in

the summer, let us know when you would like to celebrate at school.

K.A.P.E.R

Kindergartners And Parents Enjoy Reading is our take home reading program.

Books on your child’s reading level will be sent home daily.  You will read

with your child at home and sign the log in the daily folder and return the

book for another book.  Directions will be sent in the daily folder when

your class begins the program.   Each teacher will implement K.A.P.E.R

depending on your child’s readiness.

B.E.A.R.

Be Excited About Reading is the library reading program for the first

semester. Students and parents read together at home and log hours.  Look

for information in the daily folder.

First Class Behavior

We will be discussing classroom behavior for the first nine weeks.  Our

school rules are:

1. ATTENTIVE LISTENING

2.  MUTUAL RESPECT

3. RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE/ RIGHT TO PASS

4.  APPRECIATIONS / NO PUT DOWNS

5. PERSONAL BEST

We feel that these are rules that we can all follow to create the best

learning environment and to have the most fun!  Behavior will be monitored

through a stoplight system where the children are responsible for changing

their light whenever inappropriate behavior warrants.

All children begin each day on the green light.

Yellow light means oops! I had a behavior problem, but I am working on it -
Five minutes time out and a note home.

Red light indicates a more serious behavior problem- fifteen minutes in

another classroom and a note home.

Office referral indicates continued serious problem- immediate removal from

the classroom and a phone call to the parents.

A bear stamp indicates exceptional behavior.

Please remember that we will continue to emphasize and reinforce POSITIVE

behavior!  Our goal is for each child to learn to make good behavior

choices; therefore, we do allow them to earn their way back to green light.

When this occurs, please praise your child for improved behavior choices.
