Homework

   

     No homework is required for Quest at this time.  All students are 
encouraged, however, to keep a look out for books, websites, journals, 
resource persons, and interesting items related to the units of study.  
And read broadly whenever you can.

       For those who want to practice for the Math League, try the following 
problems for your grade, then try creating and solving similar ones 
yourself.  New problems next week.

Second Grade-
     Newest problems:
     (1)You are only allowed to eat 1 and 1/2 cookies a day.  If you eat all 
the cookies you are allowed, how many will you eat in one week?
     (2)Avery gave his dad four boxes of golf balls with six balls in a 
box.  His dad hit seven of the balls into lake. How many golf balls does 
Avery's dad have left?
     (3)Chase arrived at the gym at 9:30 a.m. and left at 10:45 a.m.  He 
swam forty-five minuets and trained with weights twenty minutes.  How much 
time did he have to play racket ball with his friend Tucker?
     (4)Two days ago McKenzie had 33 Valentine cards to sign her name to.  
Yesterday, she signed 17 cards, and this morning she signed another 8.  How 
many will she need to sign this afternoon if she wants to finish them?
         New Problems:
     (1)What is the next number in the pattern?  13 17 21 16 20 24 19 23 __
     (2)Write 7,036 in words.
     (3)Seven people want to go to the zoo.  It costs $6 for each ticket. 
How much will the tickets cost if everyone goes?

     (5)You are allowed to watch only one hour of TV on Saturdays. If you 
watch 22 minutes after breakfast, how many more minutes are you allowed for 
the day?  
     Old Problems:
     (1) There are nine boys and eighteen girls on the Dragon skating team.  
How many contestants are there all together?
     (2) If an eraser costs a dime and a pencil costs a quarter, how much 
would six pencils and three erasers cost?
     (3) If school starts at Old Union at 7:30 a.m. and dismisses at 3:30 
p.m. how many hours are students in school?
     (4) If you had 75 problems on a reading test and you got 23 questions 
wrong, how many did you answer correctly?
     (5) What number belongs on the line in the following problem:
                     3+9= ___+5

Third Grade-
     Newest Problems:
     (1) Complete the pattern:  ___,92,86,81,77,74,72,71
     (2) Joe is trying to build a bridge out of Legos.  If he adds 55 pieces 
each day, how long will it take him to build a bridge made from 495 pieces?
     (3) Kinza wants to purchase a camera that costs $124.00.  She has saved 
$73.00 already, and if she earns $6.00 a week babysitting, how many weeks 
will Kinza have to wait until she has enough money to purchase her camera?
     (4) At Old Union, 536 students are enrolled in  school.  124 of them 
are either in kindergarten or pre-k.  How many Old Union students are not in 
either of those grades?
     (5 Which score is possible if you start with 10 points and you have 
five turns. On each turn you could gain 5 points, 2 points, or lose 3 points.

     (1) What number is 55 less than 173?
     (2) Which of the following sets of money is most valuable?

His team's first tournament is on a Saturday, and the tournaments are always 
four days apart. Which day of the week does Avery never play in a tournament?
     (5) There a three feet in a yard.  How many yards and feet long is an 
object that measures 30 feet long?
     Old Problems:
     (1) The ditance around the outside of a two-dimensional figure is 
called the perimeter.  What is the perimeter of a triangle if each side is 
nine and a half inches long?
     (2) Which multiplication problem has the largest answer? Smallest?

     (3) At her slumber Party, Ellie fell asleep at 11:48 p.m., but she 
awoke bright and early next morning at 6:21a.m n.  How long was she 
asleep?

     (5) At Candyland you can buy bubble gum at 5 cents each, Smartees at 9 
cents each, and fireballs at 6 cents each.  If you buy 7 pieces of gum and 8 
Smartees, how much change would you get back from a $10 bill?

Fourth Grade-
     Newest Problems:
      (1) Mrs. Bunch wants to teach a new art class.  At Old Union there are 
five classes of second graders. If Class A has 22 students, Class B had 26, 
Class C has 28, Class D has 24, and Class E has 20 students, and Mrs. Bunch 
only wants a dozen equal groups of students, how many students would be in 
each group?
      (2) It snowed three days in a row.  Wednesday we got 2.4 inches, 
Thursday .25 inches, and Friday .8 inches.  How much snow did we receive in 
all those days combined?
     (3) There are three weights totaling 60 pounds on one end of a balance 
scale and five weights on the other end.  If the scale is balanced, how 
heavy is each of the smaller witghts?
     (4) Ms. Parks bought five items at the grocery store.  The cheapest 
item cost $2 and the most expensive was $7.  Which of the following amounts 
could possibly be what she spent?
      $12      $10      $25     $35    $7

    
     New Problems:
     (1) If a rectangle has a width of 7 inches and an area of 35 square 
inches, what is the width of the rectangle?
     (2) Complete the following multiplication pattern:

     (3) If you have a fifty dollar bill, how much change would you get back 
if you bought a soccer ball for $17.59, a shirt for $12.99, and a CD for 
$14.99?
     (4) Find the answer to 917-563, then round to the neares ten.  What 
answer do you get?
     (5) Nine trips to the movies costs $36.00 and five visits to the arcade 
costs $75.  What would it cost for only six trips to the movies and 3 visits 
to the arcade?
     Old Problems:
     (1) Imagine you want to be a distance runner.  One day you start 
running at 2:46 p.m. and run until 3:18 p.m.  If you run 4 miles at the same 
pace, how long will it take you to run each mile? 
     (2) For your art project you need 4 pieces of cardstock, 7 pieces of 
construction paper, and 2 small paper bags.  How many items can you make if 
you have 21 pieces of cardstock, 66 pieces of construction paper, and 11 
paper bags?
     (3) Which equation is correct if "/" means "divided by":

     (4) If you can make 8 pancakes out of 3/4 of a cup of dough, how many 
pancakes can you make with 6 cups of dough?
