Shooting Drills
Content: Teach the students about rebounds, lay-up, set shots, and jump
shots. Have the students watch as you select students to come forward and
help you demonstrate each of these basketball terms. The rebound is any time
you get a ball off the backboard or rim without making a goal or score.
A lay-up is using the backboard during a shot to the basket. A set shot is
shooting from one spot without jumping. A jump shot is leaving your feet and
releasing the ball at the peek of the jump to make a shot. Demonstrate each
of these concepts and give the students a chance to practice.
Learning Experience: Divide the students into six even groups. Send the
groups to six different stations set up on the basketball court. At each
station have the line on the right side of the rim bounce and drive to the
basket at the same time as the partner in the left line retrieves the right
line players rebound. The left line player returns the ball to the right
line and joins the right line so he can shoot. Each line keeps changing from
shooter to rebounder. The students can use any of the shots mentioned above.
Variation: Have the students change basketball stations after a while.
Switch the shooting line from right side to left side with the opposite
directions (left side shoots and right side rebounds).
