How Parents Can Help
Their Child Prepare For OLSAT/SAT
-
If you are anxious
about your child's test...that's OK, but try to keep "cool" around your child.
You don't want them to get anxious about their tests, too.
-
Help your child feel
confident about taking the test(s). Express confidence in your child's ability
to do well and keep a positive attitude about tests in general.
-
Have a relaxed
environment. Avoid activities and conversations that may arouse anxiety,
conflict, or unpleasantness.
-
Have your child go
to bed early in order to get plenty of rest.
-
Set the alarm clock
a little early, in order to allow your child time to eat and dress without
rushing.
-
See that your
child's uniform is laid out so that frantic searches are avoided.
-
Be sure that all
necessary school materials (backpacks, snack/lunch bags, etc.) are together
and located where they will not be forgotten the following morning.
-
Provide a good and
healthy breakfast for your child every day of testing. Having food in their
stomach will give them the energy they need to help maintain their focus.
Avoid heavy foods that could make them groggy and high sugar foods that may
make them hyper.
-
Ensure that your
child is not late for school during the testing week. Notify the school office
if your child will be absent.
-
Talking with your
child about the test can relieve some of the stress he/she may be feeling.
Listen carefully and acknowledge your child's feelings. Be supportive and
encouraging.
