Keeping In Touch! (K.I.T.)

Welcome 2010!

Where do I begin? We have been working so hard since my last update!
December was a great month. We learned a ton about other cultures, customs,
and traditions. We ended our lessons on Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Las Posadas,
Chinese New Year's, Thailand New Year's and Christmas with a holiday rotation
to each class. Thank you to all of the parents who came in to read and to
share their holiday traditions.

Now that we are back...
We had an outstanding Ice Castle Day. The students really enjoyed watching
the ice melt. We made 3 ice castles! We had one in the shade, one in the
sun, and one in the classroom. The students made predictions about when the
ice would melt, how much water would be left, and what makes the ice melt the
fastest.

Our class participated in the Science Fair. In case you did not get a chance
to see it, we explored the color black. Using a coffee filter, water, and a
marker, we did an experiment to see what colors make up black. The kids had
a great time and got a kick out of seeing our class-board at the fair.

Jackie Koefoot is our new student intern. She will be with me every day
until mid-April. This is her student internship. This means that when she
graduates in May, she will be a teacher! I am very lucky to have her in my
class.

These last two weeks we have been working on many things. Here are just a
few!
In writing, we are working on editing each other's work. We look for spaces
between words, sight-words spelled correctly, punctuation, and capitals where
they should be. We will continue to work on all of these things this week.

In reading, we did an author study on Margaret Cuyler. We visited her
website and read 4 of her books. To finish our study, we did a Venn diagram
comparing two of her "Jessica Worries" books. The kids also did a text-to-
self connection between themselves and Jessica.

In Science we worked on our science fair project, studied the weather, and of
course did Ice Castle Day.

In math, we are working problem-solving, temperature, and this week we will
work on length.

Thank you!
