Newsflash UIL

11-18-09:

I have only one firm commitment for Dec 5. Time to creep out of the woodwork, folks.

Here are two practice topics for the Ready Writers to practice on. You have two hours, must write in ink, on the front of the sheets of paper only(Arrrgh!) and have a title(for the essay, that is).

Topic 1:
"America has toiled more than two centuries now, trying to craft a system of free expression that respects both the individual and the larger community. When should your right to express yourself prevail over my right not to share your expression? That's the trick question and the answer requires more than magic. It requires maturity, responsibility and vigilance."

Kathleen Parker, "Sometimes, freedom can be messy,"
                                                                                 Orlando Sentinel, Sept 9 2007

Topic 2:
" I do not see what it makes for the safety, good morals, and certainly not for the dignity, of men, that some have conquered and others have been conquered, except that it yields them that most insane pomp of human glory, in which ' they have received their reward' who burned with excessive desire of it and carried on most eager wars."
                                                                                 Augustine(354-430),
                                                                                 City of God, V, 17

NB: If you are a speller or a critter and feel intrigued by the level of thinking and writing, let me know. We don't turn away too many people around here.

11-13-09:

11-09-09:

Vocab and Spelling contestants need to come by tomorrow to pick up materials. The CD contains all you need for the foreseeable future.

11-05-09:
I am adding the following students to the Spelling crew on the suspicion that they are still interested. I know some are, some may not be.
Kirby Campbell
Emily Bruner
Christina Berger
Paige McCarthy
I have been trying to find the old email addresses, and have finally succeeded.

11-05-09:
Spelling and vocab only:

THE MATERIALS FOR SPELLING AND VOCAB ARE IN!
I have burned CD's with all necessary files on them. Come by Tuesday and pick them up.

11-02-09:
I just posted the schedule for the Birdville meet on Nov 7 on the site under LINKS(last link).
Check to see if you have a conflict.

11-02-09:
I just found out that we have the opportunity to enter 3 ready writing and 3 lit crit competitors for Saturday's invitational:
These are the ones who are eligible to go to the meet, but I have also benn given today as a deadline.
Let me know ASAP if you can go. Mr Johnson will give me or you the details.

If you have a conflict that day, your parents will need to write the circumstances of the conflict at the bottom of the permission slip and specify drop-ff and pick-up times.

10-28-09:
We will go to the December 5 at Aledo. By then we should have the materials we need.

10-26-09:
This is my first mailing with an updated address file. I know that I am missing a few people, but that can be fixed. A few parents may get stuff also. Mail me if I need to unsubscribe them.

Here is what I suggest for for November 7,if we go at all.

The Spelling and Vocab group stays home. We don't have the materials yet.
The Ready Writing team goes. There is little or no preparation involved.
The Lit Crit team goes with great humility to sniff out the competition. I will burn CD's with the required materials for all competitors. I can order more handbooks.

I need to wait to see what Mr Johnson thinks before I ask for people to sign up.
The CD's for the Lit Crit team are made. Pick them up from me.
