Reading
We are using the Making Words curriculum first thing every morning to study word structure and
phonics. Small groups are working on several differentiated skills. Children who are reading
well are
reading for information and putting on plays with Reader's Theater. Many children are able to
read
independently and take Accelerated Reader tests on the computer. We have a new Vocabulary
book
and the students enjoy this work.
Other students are working on decoding new words in context, defining story elements and
developing fluency and phrasing.
Math
We use several approaches in math. We just finished a cursory look at addition and will start
subtraction after the Hiding assessment. We are beginning fact work with adition.
Science
We will do an in-depth study of pumpkins. We have been hard at work making and recording
observations of trees, leaves and rocks.
Social Studies
We will move from self and family to community. Be on the lookout for a project on community
helpers.
