Ask the LibrarianI am open at 7:30 AM for AR Tests. If you need to take a test please feel free to come by. If you have a question you can email me at msmith4@houstonisd.org
How can children receive free books from the library? Students receive free books for AR points. This is in addition to reaching the levels of Independent, Super, Advanced, Star and Classic. Check the AR board outside the cafeteria for an explanation of the levels and points. Money to purchase these free books comes from the PTO. Please join and help us keep up this program. How can my child vote in the Bluebonnet Election? The Bluebonnet books are a group of 20 nominees chosen by the Texas Library Association each year. The program is for students in grades 3-5. Students read at least 5 and pass the AR tests by January in order to vote. I tally up the school's votes and send them to the TLA in Austin. They tally up all the votes from schools throughout Texas and the most votes wins the Bluebonnet Award for that year. Each year different books are selected. How can my child attend the Bluebonnet Breakfast? If a students reads and passes tests on 3rd grade - 10 Bluebonnets 4th grade - 12 Bluebonnets 5th grade - 15 Bluebonnets they are invited to breakfast in the library in May. They really have the whole year to read. The only Bluebonnets are the ones for that year. (I have the list of Bluebonnet books on this site under Reading Lists) Students in grades 3,4 and 5 are required to read at least 5 Bluebonnet books by January in order to vote. If they read 5 they will receive a 100 for the Bluebonnet grade which is averaged in to other reading grades. For some classes the Bluebonnet Breakfast is a requirement. Check with your child's teacher to see if they require this. AR stands for Accelerated Reader. This is a computer program sold by Renaissance Learning. The program provides multiple choice tests for various books. We subscribe to the web based AR program. This means we have access to all tests Renaissance Learning has to offer which is over 100,000 tests. To see if we have a test you can log on to www.renlearn.com and go to STORE, QUIZ STORE, and QUIZ SEARCH. You can put in a book title and see if there is a test for that particular book. Where can my child take an AR test? Tests can only be taken at school. Our school is networked so tests can be taken in any classroom or the library. They may not take a test outside of the school. How do I know how my child is doing in AR? Check the AR board outside the cafeteria. It is put up at the end of September each year. If I don't understand this what can I do? EMAIL me! msmith4@houstonisd.org I am more than happy to explain this to you if it is confusing! How can I see my child's AR record? You can email me at msmith4@houstonisd.org and I can email you your child's AR record directly from the program. This is one of the features of our new web based AR. Can I get a reading list of books at my child's level? Yes!! Follow the steps on the answer to question 5. Once you are at the quiz store page you will see ADVANCED SEARCH on the right. If you click on this you will have access to a search tool where you can put in your child's reading level and some choices for types of books your child likes to read. It will create a reading list of AR tests your child has access to. Some books may be at Red however, you can bring the list to the public library or a book store to see what they have. This is a program for students in grades PRE-K through 2. The 2 by 2 books (see reading lists on my site) are books for age 2 through grade 2. Teachers read the books to the classes and vote for their favorite book. The winner is announced at the Bluebell Break and the children celebrate by eating Bluebell ice cream. |
