There will be a Parent Information Meeting on Feb 18 at 7pm for parents of
students who will be attending Hernandez Middle School next year. The
meeting will be held at the future Hernandez MS campus (currently SP9).
Freshman Choice Sheets for SPHS and CRHS are posted under the Choice Sheets
TAB on the Counselor's website. The information that all 8th graders received
last week is also posted along with practice 4 year plans. Students will get
their official registration packets on Feb 11th for SPHS and the 19th for
CRHS. They are due back to their advisory teacher on March 4th.
Stony Point Information Night is February 16th at Stony Point High School
from 6:30-7:30 in the SPHS cafeteria. I am asking that parents needing
assistance with 4-year plans and choice sheets please attend this meeting to
have your questions answered. SPHS counselors will be there to give
information about 4-year plans and general high school information.
Cedar Ridge Information night Feb 22 6:30-8:00pm in the RMS cafeteria. I am
asking that parents needing assistance with 4-year plans and choice sheets
please attend this meeting to have your questions answered. The Cedar Ridge
counselor and Mrs. Leverette will be there to assist you with 4-year plans.
March 2nd- from 12:00-12:30-The counseling department will be hosting a Brown
Bag Parent meeting in the Ridgeview Pro-Center to discuss any last minute
high school questions -Bring your own lunch and questions. CRHS will be there
to answer questions.
GREAT NEWS! The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at The University of Texas
at Austin is now accepting applications for its summer program for middle
school girls: Careers in Engineering for Women (CEW). This residential
program is designed to introduce students to engineering. The long-term goal
of CEW is to increase the representation of women in the field of
engineering. During this unique, interactive, and fun weeklong experience,
CEW participants will put their math and science skills to practical use.

• Residential summer camp for girls currently in 6th or 7th grade
• Weeklong session held June 13-19, 2010 on UT Austin
campus
• Forty exceptional middle school students will be accepted to attend
During CEW, participants will explore different aspects of engineering
through hands-on activities and challenges. The girls will work in teams to
design, construct, and implement solutions to exciting engineering problems.
Students will also interact with industry personnel, Cockrell School of
Engineering faculty, and energetic UT Austin engineering students.

6th graders will be completing a Career Interest Inventory during the week of
Jan. 25 through the 29th. They will be completing this activity during their
World Cultures classes.
Mr. Damron will soon begin talking with the 6th graders about their elective
choice sheets for 7th grade. This information will be presented to the
students through their math classes beginning on Feb. 18 and running through
Feb 26. Choice sheets will be due back to the students' ADVISORY teachers by
March 5.

Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day is a free event for girls in the 1st –
8th grade. Students at Girl Day will work on fun activities that highlight
math and science, meet engineers and UT engineering students, faculty and
staff and get a free t-shirt after completing a survey at the end of the
day. This event is free but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. For more information,

Annual TAG Conference for Parents

Parents will benefit from a variety of sessions offered by campus, district,
and area experts in topics of interest including social/emotional issues,
supporting academic interests at home, transition from elementary to middle
school, and opportunities to earn for college credit in high school.
Information regarding TAGT scholarships and the district elementary and
middle school TAG camps will also be available.
The student session will be provided by district TAG specialists. Students
will engage in games and activities that are designed for elementary gifted
students. No student may register without an accompanying adult registration.

National College Fair will be on Tuesday, April 13 at the Austin Convention

Princeton Review Future Finder website link can be found under the college
and career tab. Student's usernames are 051-lastname-firstinitial-last 3
digits of their School ID #. Their passwords were all set by the students.
For those interested in the RRISD Mentoring program, there will be a district-
wide training held on December 4, 2009 at 2pm at the RRISD Administration
Bldg. The training will last approximately one hour.

Open Nominations for TAG begin November 16th.Nomination packets will be
available in the counseling office beginning November 16th at 8am, completed
referral paperwork and permission to test must be received by 4pm on Friday
December 4th. Nominations may be completed by teachers, parents or by the
student but parent permission must be obtained for the evaluation process. Go
to Informational Flyers for detailed instructions on how to access the
nomination packet online beginning Monday November 16th.

Last month 8th grade students explored career options through the OSCAR
program. I encourage students and parents to continue visiting OSCAR to
explore all of the resources provided by this informational program. OSCAR
can be accessed through the career tab on this site.
Students who were absent can do the interest inventory by going to the OSCAR
website via the career tab and selecting I want to take the full flight--
Assessment--I want to do the interest profiler--Go to the profiler and follow
the directions. At the end of the profiler an interest score will be shown
along with a list of jobs that might be of interest.
In continuing with career and college exploration, 8th graders will have the
opportunity to explore the Princeton Review Future Finder program during the
week of November 2-6. This program allows students to view information about
hundreds of universities around the country. There is also scholarship
information and interest inventories that they can explore. As freshman next
year, they will be able to communicate with their H.S. counselor and exchange
their college search information via the future finder program.
Another informational site is Cappex.com. It has information on college and
scholarship searches.

Examination for Acceleration forms are due to your grade level counselor by
August 27, 2009. Exams will be administered September 8-9, 2009 at
Ridgeview. Students wishing to participate in Examination for Acceleration
through the district at the district's expense must take the exams during the
above window. If a student is unable to participate during this time, they
may make arrangements with the University of Texas Learning Education Center
and take the exams at their expense ($30.00 per exam).
There will be a second chance to take these exams next summer with
registration beginning in May 2010.
