Summer Scholarships for Twice-Exceptional Students
The Belin-Blank Center at the University of Iowa is pleased to announce a
scholarship opportunity for twice-exceptional students. The Center recently
received a grant from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation which provides
scholarships for twice-exceptional students to attend the Summer Programs.
Parents of students who have been identified as twice-exceptional and are
interested in one of the summer programs, are invited to complete an online
application for that program. Applications will be reviewed and applicants
will be notified if selected to attend. The JKC Scholarship will cover all of
the costs of the program. Funding is limited.
Twice-exceptional students are gifted and talented students with learning,
behavioral, or social impairments, such as autism spectrum disorders (ASD),
specific learning disabilities (SLD), and attention-deficit/ hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD). These students are at significant risk in America’s schools
because their disabilities often mask their academic potential. Twice-
exceptional students are underrepresented in gifted and talented programs and
rarely receive appropriate direct services in schools, which places these
students at an academic and social disadvantage. For twice-exceptional
students to flourish academically and socially, they must be appropriately
identified and have access to programming opportunities that address both
their gifts and their needs.
Please complete the form at the link below to apply for the scholarship.

ACE Academy presents an
Evening Workshop for Parents, Thursday, January 13th, 2011
7:00 – 9:00 PM
IF OUR CHILD IS SO SMART, WHY AREN’T OUR LIVES EASIER?
Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D.
Gifted children are expensive and time-consuming. They usually need less
sleep than you do, ask more questions than you can answer, want 100 percent
of your attention 24 hours a day, have obsessive hobbies, react intensely to
everything, endlessly long for a best friend who understands them completely,
hold perfectionistic standards for themselves and you, want to know the
meaning of life when other children only want to know how to whistle, and
keep their bedrooms in a condition you can never show company. In order to
be the perfect parent, you need unlimited funds, unlimited patience, an
encyclopedic mind, and someone to sleep for you. In this session, we will be
discussing such issues as coping with the characteristics of giftedness;
siblings and birth order; understanding introversion; underachievement; and
keys to successful parenting. You will receive an owner’s manual, “Guidelines
for Parents of the Gifted,” which contains suggestions for harmonious family
life. There will be a question and answer period, but I don’t have all the
answers. Trust Yourself! No one knows your child better than you do.
Cost: $30 per person, $40 per couple, ACE Academy, renting at Congregation
Beth Israel, 3901 Shoal Creek Blvd., Smith Hall (left side of the synagogue
as you face it). For reservations email Chelsea Bunn at cbunn@AustinGifted.
Linda Kreger Silverman, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist. She directs the
Institute for the Study of Advanced Development, and its subsidiary, the
Gifted Development Center (www.gifteddevelopment.com) in Denver, Colorado.
Over 5,800 children have been assessed at the Gifted Development Center in
the last 31 years. She also founded Visual-Spatial Resource
(www.visualspatial.org). Her Ph.D. is in educational psychology and special
education from the University of Southern California. For nine years, she
served on the faculty of the University of Denver in counseling psychology
and gifted education. She co-chaired the NAGC Task Force on IQ
Interpretation, during which research was conducted leading to extended norms
on the WISC-IV. She has been studying the psychology and education of the
gifted since 1961 and has written over 300 articles, chapters and books,
including Counseling the Gifted and Talented, Upside-Down Brilliance: The
Visual-Spatial Learner and Advanced Development: A Collection of Works on
