It is a blessing to start my 31st year of teaching. What delight to be able
to help bring a joyful noise to Rockenbaugh Elementary.I moved from
Lubbock,Texas in May 2006. I am married to Norm Smith. He is the head tennis
coach at Carroll Senior High School. We have two beautiful daughters. Amy is
27 and married to police officer Jason Hancock. She is an elementary PE
teacher/coach in Lubbock. Kelli is 23 and is an honor graduate at Texas Tech.
She is currently starting her 2nd year as an intern for Campus Crusade for
Christ at Tech.
I am delighted to be at Rockenbaugh Elementary as a full-time music teacher.
Your child will have music the entire year. By doing this, your child will
not only learn basic fundamentals of music, but experience enjoyment as
well. Basic fundamentals will include music theory, music history, playing
instruments and singing songs. From fourth grade down to Kindergarten, your
child will be introduced to various rhythms and music symbols throughout the
school year. This will also allow them to actually read and perform musical
scores. Kindergarten and first graders are encouraged to work on steady
beats and rhythm patterns by using percussive instruments and playing age
appropriate music games. In additon, singing and movement will be
incorporated to reinforce further concepts. Second through fourth graders
will continue to build on the basics. Rhythm patterns will be at a higher
level. They will also have the opportunity to experience different Orff
instruments. (Xylophone, metallophone and glockenspiel) Continued learning
will also be achieved by way of basic choreography moves and having an
appreciation for classical music/composers. A recorder unit will be part of
the curriculum in the fourth grade. Third graders will have a kazoo unit
as well as boomwhackers as a part of their curriculum. There will be a basic
boomwhacker unit introduced to the second graders this school year. All grade
levels will have a unit on drumming. There will also be an opportunity for
all students to perform in a grade level music program this school year. I am
most proud of RESPECT. This is an after school choir opened to all fourth
graders who enjoy singing. As you can see, music is still alive and well at
Rockenbaugh Elementary. I am here to help make music a lifetime journey of
enjoyment. In Mrs. Smith's class we "Sing Loud and Sing Proud"!
