Mrs. Carlson received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Rhetoric
from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Before her teaching
career, she worked as a technical writer for four years, both salaried and
freelance. In addition, she spent two years working for a human resource
company, where she had her first teaching opportunity. She taught an
informal business writing class to adults who needed help with resumes,
cover letters and other types of professional writing. Helping others with
the written word sparked her interest in teaching at the high school level.
She received her teaching certificate through Region IV and the University
of St. Thomas in 2002. She received her Advanced Placement certification
through the Rice University AP Institute in 2005. Mrs. Carlson is also
certified to teach Gifted and Talented and Honors (pre-AP)English.
I believe that writing is an essential skill for students to master in order
for them to succeed in college and the business world, but writing can also
connect us to others in a profound way. As a teacher and a writer, I wish to
encourage students to examine the nuances of human nature and thought as
revealed in both fiction and non-fiction literature and to continue this
tradition by encouraging them to write academically, professionally, and
personally.
