RRHS Academies

Beginning in Fall 2009, the RRHS Acadmies will be:

Who can join?

All freshmen with an interest in the area may join us! For the Business and STEM academies, you must live in the RRHS attendance zone. For the Human Services Academy, students outside the RRHS attendance zone are also eligible if they have an In-District Transfer Request approved.

Why should I join?

First, for the experiences! In Criminal Justice, you are taught by Round Rock Police Officers. And in STEM, you are taught by a former engineer. You will get the latest information and opportunities in your field. Second, it will help you determine what you want to study in college. You may find out that you love education and want to continue studying it in college. But you may also determine that it's not what you expected so you want to try something else in college. Either way, you're ahead! Finally, our hope is that it may help you get into competitive college programs. We can't prove or guarantee this of course, but if you are applying to a program that is difficult to get into, and you can show that you've already done 4 years of work in the field, we hope it will show the school you are applying to that you are serious about the field. Plus, it never hurts to learn all you can about these fields. We will all be consumers, students, parents, restaurant patrons, etc., for many years to come. The more we learn now, the more informed our decisions will be.

What are the requirements?

Each year, you must take at least 1 credit in your designated academy. For example, if you are in the Human Services Academy studying education, you would take 1 credit (this means a full-year course or 2 semester courses) in courses about teaching, schools, and children.

How do I join?

Fill out the application found on pages 19 & 20 of the Academy Brochure. Bring it to the office at Round Rock High School. Also, if you will be applying for an In-District Transfer so you can attend RRHS, please fill out this form and bring to the school as well.

When can I join?

Applications are accepted during the spring of your 8th grade year. For example, the deadline this year was February 27. However, we can still accept applications as long as room is available in the courses you want. So just give us a call if you're interested.

What if I need more information?

E-mail or call the Lead Teacher of the academies, Mrs. Peggy Mica, at Round Rock High School - 464-6065. The brochure also has more information.
