About The Teacher
After working for several years with young offenders in Texas, I realized that state services to improve their education were too little help, at a time much too late in their lives. A common regret expressed by nearly every one of the over 2,000 clients who sat across from my desk was that they did not work hard in school. One boy admitted to me that he was allowed to go through school on "cruise control", not trying, and therefore, not succeeding, as success can only be measured when effort is part of the equation. I decided to earn my Master's in Education as a Reading Specialist, because all higher level occupations are dependent on the mastery of reading. If I could teach a child to read and write well at an early age, then I am, in effect, helping prepare him to be an architect, an astronaut, or any thing else he or she desires to become.

Mission
The READ 180 Instructional Model provides a simple way to organize instruction and classroom activity. The session begins and ends with whole- group teacher-directed instruction. During the 60 minutes between the whole- group meetings, students break into three small groups that rotate among three stations. There is a segment of time designated for instructional software use, independent reading, and small group instruction. This information was taken from: http://teacher.scholastic.com. Grades will be broken down into the following three types: Instructional Software (50%), Book Activities (25%), and Assessments (25%). The Instructional Software category will include grades in Comprehension, Vocabulary, Word Fluency, Spelling, and Context Passages. The Book Activities category will be composed of a sampling of work from whole and small group instruction in the RBook. The Assessments category will include two Independent Reading Quizzes, a Skills Test and a grade for participation in the program. No assignment will be worth more than 15% of the total grade, per Round Rock Independent School District policy. I expect all my students to: *work hard *respect one another *enjoy cell phones and ipods outside of class *be on time with appropriate materials for class I will remind students of the rules and point out where the rules are posted. If there should still be confusion on appropriate classroom behavior, I will have a private conference with the student; if needed, I will document any concerns on an in-class referral form and then call home. If these consequences fail to yield target behavior, I will refer the student to an administrator for assistance. Celebrations are necessary to show that proper behavior is appreciated. There will be award ceremonies and opportunities to earn special privileges This school year has a theme: “What does it take to be a survivor?” Students will explore the qualities of different types of survivors, including Bethany Hamilton, a shark attack survivor, and the leaders of the Civil Rights Movement in America. We will then transform our learning into a project which will strengthen literacy in our community. My tutoring hours are every morning from 7:30 until 9:00 and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4:15 to 5:15. You do not need an appointment to come in for help; the computers will be available for academic work only. First and fifth periods are my planning periods. It is going to be an exemplary year!
