Monday                               Obj. – Students will review poetry terminology to help aid discussion and analysis of poems.

Warm-Up:       Vocab – Lesson 8 (Source 504 Absolutely Essential Words) – quiz Friday

  • Poetry Terms Review
    • Review terminology that was taught in previous years

 

Tuesday                               Obj. – Students will find examples of sound devices (assonance and consonance) in a variety of texts and then interpret and analyze how these devices are used to affect the text.

TEKS – 15Bii

 

Warm-Up:       descriptive sentence, DOL Day 4

  • LIBRARY DAY (3rd period)
  • Alliteration/Assonance/Consonance
    • Define literary elements (in PreAP vertical teams book pg 13)
    • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 23-24 (daily grade)
    • Write sentences using these devices (source APSI 2005 pg 113-4)

 

 

Wednesday                         Obj. – Students will look at the use of repetition in poetry and analyze its purpose.  Then they will write a poem using this device

TEKS – 15Bi, 19Ai

 

Warm-Up:       descriptive sentence, DOL Day 5

  • Parallel Poem (use of repetition)
    • Define literary element - repetition (in PreAP vertical teams book pg 15)
    • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 35-36 – write a poem using the repetitive line “But time marches on” to illustrate events from their personal life in chronological order.  Due Friday. (minor assessment grade)
  • Verbs, Gerunds, Participles (-ing words) - Source APSI notebook 2005 pg 97-99
    • Students will write a sentence using each of the –ing words
    • They will then identify if the word is used as a verb, gerund, or participle. Then they will write 2 other sentences using the word as one of the other forms. (daily grade)

 

Thursday                       Obj. – Students will change trite words and phrases to more descriptive ones using imagery.

Warm-Up:       descriptive sentence, DOL Check

  • Description – discuss importance of descriptive phrases instead of trite phrases
  • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 42-43 (daily grade)
  • Computer Lab (5th hour) – type poems from this week

 

 

Friday                                   Obj. – Students will recognize the difference in abstract and concrete nouns. They will use this recognition to write poetry that transforms abstract nouns to a concrete form.

TEKS – 15B, 19

 

Warm-Up:       study vocabulary, DOL Day 1

  • vocabulary quiz (minor assessment grade)
  • Abstract to Concrete Nouns
    • Source APSI 2005 pg 121-125 – write a poem that changes an abstract noun to concrete form. (daily grade)

 

 

December 7-11, 2009                   

 

Monday                               Obj. – Students will create poems using graphic elements.

TEKS – 15Biii

           

Warm-Up:       Vocab – Lesson 9 (Source 504 Absolutely Essential Words) – quiz Friday

  • Concrete Poetry
    • Discuss format for concrete poetry
    • Look at different samples
    • Brainstorm and write a pictogram poem (topic: holidays – Thanksgiving, Christmas, winter) – minor assessment grade  (due Wednesday)
  • Scrapbook Day – work on narratives for 3rd six weeks

 

Tuesday                               Obj. – Students will be introduced to the TP-CASTT method and use this method to analyze a poem as a class.

TEKS – 4, 8

 

Warm-Up:       ??, DOL Day 2

  • TPCASTT – introduce concept of using TPCASTT to analyze poetry (Source APSI 2007 pg 206-8)
  • Use TPCASTT to analyze “Empty House” (as a class)

 

Wednesday                         Obj. – Students will create poems using graphic elements.

TEKS – 15Biii

 

Warm-Up:       ??, DOL Day 3

  • Wordles (Word Clouds)
    • Discuss format for wordless
    • Look at different samples
    • Brainstorm and create a wordle (topic: anything dealing with adolescence) – minor assessment grade (due Friday)
  • Computer Lab (5th period) – type poems for poetry wall

 

Thursday                       Obj. – Students will analyze the poem “Jabberwocky” looking at the use of nonsense words and the grammatical set up.

TEKS – 4, 15Bi, 19

 

Warm-Up:       ??, DOL Day 4

  • TPCASTT “Barter” on your own – due at the end of class (major assessment grade)
  • “Jabberwocky”
    • Look at “Jabberwocky” as a nonsense poem (discuss and analyze poem)
    • Rewrite the poem replacing nonsense words with other words (daily grade)
