Monday                               Obj. – Students will change trite words and phrases to more descriptive ones using imagery.

Warm-Up:       Vocab – 10 words -- SAT Set #4 words (Source www.vocabulary.com) – definitions due Friday (daily grade); quiz Friday (minor assessment grade)

  • Description – discuss importance of descriptive phrases instead of trite phrases
  • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 42-43 (daily grade)
  • Write a descriptive poem about one of the seasons – follow the format of the given example (Source APSI 2005 pg 107) – minor assessment grade (due Wednesday)

 

Tuesday                               Obj. – Students will analyze the poem “Jabberwocky” looking at the use of nonsense words and the grammatical set up.

TEKS – 4, 15Bi, 19

 

Warm-Up:       Diagram Sentence:

  • Jabberwocky (from file)
    • Look at Jabberwocky as a nonsense poem (discuss and analyze poem)
    • Discuss grammatical setup of the poem including parts of speech
    • Look at true meaning of the text and nonsense words
    • Write a sequel to the poem using the same style and format (major assessment grade) -- due Thursday
  • LIBRARY DAY (2nd period)

Thursday                             Obj. – Students will find examples of sound devices (assonance and consonance) in a variety of texts and then interpret and analyze how these devices are used to affect the text.

  • Alliteration/Assonance/Consonance
    • Define literary elements (in PreAP vertical teams book pg 13)
    • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 23-24 (daily grade)
    • Write sentences using these devices (source APSI 2005 pg 113-4)
  • Sentence Diagramming: compound sentences?

 

Friday                                   Obj. – Students will recognize the difference in abstract and concrete nouns. They will use this recognition to write poetry that transforms abstract nouns to a concrete form.

Warm-Up:       Study for vocab quiz

  • Vocabulary Quiz (minor assessment grade)
  • Abstract to Concrete Nouns
    • Source APSI 2005 pg 121-125 – write a poem that changes an abstract noun to concrete form. (daily grade)



 

December 7-11, 2009                   

 

Monday                               Obj. – Students will compose a poem about themselves following a given format.

Warm-Up:       Vocab – 10 words -- SAT Set #4-5 words (Source www.vocabulary.com) – definitions due Friday (daily grade); quiz Friday (minor assessment grade)

  • I Am… poem (from file) – due Tuesday (daily grade)
  • Scrapbook Day – work on narratives for 3rd six weeks

 

Tuesday                               Obj. – Students will be introduced to the TP-CASTT method and use this method to analyze a poem as a class.

Warm-Up:       Diagram Sentence:

  • TPCASTT – introduce concept of using TPCASTT to analyze poetry (Source APSI 2007 pg 206-8)
  • Use TPCASTT to analyze “Empty House” (as a class)

 

Wednesday                    Obj. – Students will create poems using graphic elements.

Warm-Up:       Diagram Sentence:

  • Wordles (Word Clouds)
    • Discuss format for wordless
    • Look at different samples
    • Brainstorm and create a wordle (topic: anything dealing with adolescence) – minor assessment grade (due Friday)
  • Computer Lab (2nd period) – type poems for poetry wall

 

Thursday                             Obj. – Students will create a poem that contrasts two different voices/tones.

Warm-Up:       Diagram Sentence:

  • TPCASTT “Barter” on your own – due at the end of class (major assessment grade)
  • Compare/Contrast Poem (Different Voices poem) -- From file – “Make a Joyful Noise” poem
    • Working with a partner you will compose a poem to be read by two people. Follow the format from the examples for ideas. (due Friday daily grade)

 

Friday                                   Obj. – Students will look at the use of repetition in poetry and analyze its purpose.  Then they will write a poem using this device

  • Parallel Poem (use of repetition)
    • Define literary element - repetition (in PreAP vertical teams book pg 15)
    • “Poetry Writing” workbook pg 35-36 – write a poem using the repetitive line “But time marches on” to illustrate events from their personal life in chronological order.  Due Monday. (minor assessment grade)
