Hello! What a rainy week! I hope you have stayed dry this week! Here are some things we have been working on:

Language Arts: We read the big book Guess Who? and guessed the workers that were being described. We read Lazy Mary and looked for sight words within the text. We read The 100th Day of School on Wednesday to see how another class celebrated 100 days of school. We practiced our reading and writing during Daily 5. We practiced blending and segmenting and learned about the long and short sounds for /i/. We worked on writing our stories that we are going to "publish".

Math: We learned how a thermometer works to measure temperature. We did an experiment with ice and rock salt to see how frost is formed. We used thermometers to measure the temperature of the ice and then the temperature of our thumbs! We made paper thermometers and practiced moving them up and down to show the temperature. We did lots of "100" stations on Wednesday to celebrate the 100th day of school! We learned about weight and how to measure weight with a balance scale and put things in order according to their weight.

Unit of Inquiry: We are learning about the systems we have in place to meet our wants and needs. We read The World of Ants to see what a system is and how it works. We pretended we were shipwrecked on a desert island and made a list of the things we would need to survive and then another list to show things we would want to have on the island. We read Communities and Their Wants and Needs. We compared the wants and needs in the book to our wants and needs. We drew a picture to show a want and a need for our community.

Announcements: Next Wednesday is Early Release Day-students will be released at 12:45. I am trying to change books in the book bags as often as possible but they may only get changed once a week. I am not going to ask you to keep a record any longer because it is too hard for me to keep up with and check to see if a new one is needed. Make sure your child reads the book as many times as it takes for them to be fluent and to recognize any words they do not know. You can make a sight word bingo game or lotto game with the words in the book to extend their learning. Or, you can have them do a simple book report by writing about their favorite part of the book. Thank you for your help in partnering with me in your child's learning! Have a great weekend!
