4th Grade Homework

Dear Parents and Students,

Don't forget to order your Star water bottle!!

Friday is fun day!!! During class we will be playing games and enjoying a 
snack or two. Remember if your student wants to participate in the white 
elephant grab bag they are to bring in a wrapped, chapter, age appropriate, 
book.  

Following are the spelling words for this week:
picture

The worksheet and sentences are due Thursday. There will be spelling test on 
Thursday.

Also due Thursday the students should have read  up to and including chapter 
20 in either Holes or Crispin. There will be a quiz on those 10 chapters.

Poem requirements and illustrations are to be done by Tuesday!!!!

You may have to complete the art at home.

Following are the poems and the rubric for each poem that has to be completed 
by Friday.

1.	Haiku – has 3 lines. First line has 5 syllables, second line has 7 
syllables and the third line has 5 syllables.

2.	Metaphor Poem compares one thing with another very different thing. A 
metaphor does not use the words like or as. Ex. The road was a ribbon of 
black. 

    3.  Diamante Poem has a definite pattern to it.
	Line 1 and 7 state subjects that are opposite (puppy/dog)
	Line 2 has two adjectives describing the subject in line 1
	Line 3 has three action words specific to line 1
        Line 4 has four adjectives. The first two describe line 1 and the 
second  two describe the subject in line 7.
Line 5 has three action words specific to line 7
Line 6 has two adjectives describing the subject in line 7
Line 7 the opposite subject of line 1

4.	Free Verse is a poem written without a pattern or rhyme, meter or 
line length. Use  this poem to tell about feelings. 

5.	Lyric Poem – Focus on feeling and impressions. This poem should be 
two stanzas with a rhyming pattern. This poem has rhyming pattern of lines 1 
and 3 rhyme, 2 and 4 rhyme 5 and 7 rhyme, and 6 and 8 rhyme.

6.	Alliteration – When several words that begin with the same sound are 
next or each other or close together. Ex. Bubble, bays, babble 

7.	Personification – When a writer describes something that is not human 
as having human qualities or capabilities. 

8.  Onomatopoeia – When a word sounds like the noise or sound that it stands 
for. The Buzz of a bee can be written The Buzzzzzzz of a bee went past my 
ear!
