Quizzes, Binder Checks • Tests / Projects 40% Ex. Tests, Projects Daily Work – Work in class, homework assignments, and class participation are counted as daily work assignments. Any assignment not completed in class needs to be completed at home and turned in at the beginning of the next class period. Quizzes – Most quizzes given are open notes. This is an opportunity to reward students who are bringing their materials to class. I will have binder checks periodically throughout the six weeks to make sure students are keeping up with their grades, notes, and assignments. Tests – Students will take written tests throughout the semester. Students are also given at least one project a six weeks. I will provide time in class for students to work on projects. Any unfinished project will need to be done on student’s time outside of class. Extra Credit – Will be accepted at any time during the semester. The more the articles and reflections, the more extra credit the student will receive towards grade. 1. Students are expected to bring in health related current event articles and write a minimum of a half page reflection (opinions, thoughts, questions, reflections) on each article. Do not write a summary over the article. The articles should come from reliable health sources: newspapers, magazines, internet sites, etc. The articles should pertain to the topics being taught that six weeks period. 2. Daily Work, Quizzes, and Test corrections will only be allowed at my discretion. Students who fail a test will only be allowed to receive a 70 with test corrections. Semester Grade Each semester is divided by four: 1st six weeks, 2nd six weeks, 3rd six weeks, and final exam. 24 Hour Grade and Attendance Access RRHS has a 24 hour parent/guardian access account for current grades and attendance. Grades and attendance can be seen from an online computer. A parent or guardian needs to stop in person to the main office to sign a waiver. Fitnessgram Physical Fitness Test Texas Senate Bill 530 was signed in June 2007 requiring all students, grades 3-12, to have mandatory physical testing reported to the Texas Education Agency. The purpose of the bill is to see how physical fitness affects overall student academic performance. “The law is expected to trim growing numbers of overweight and obese children. Research shows that more than one- third of school kids in Texas suffer from weight problems, and as a result, those children are pre-disposed to adult on-set diabetes.” For more information go to http://www.cooperaerobics.com/corporate/PRTexasSenateBill530.aspx All students in physical education and health classes will test Monday, 9/10/07 – Monday, 9/17/07. All students will need to bring an appropriate t- shirt, shorts, socks, and gym shoes to class during the days of testing. Students will be tested on the following components: pacer, curl-ups, push- ups, flexibility, body composition, height, and weight. Cell Phones Telecommunication devices are permitted on school property. Students may keep cell phones OFF in lockers, backpacks, or purses. Students are not allowed to use them at anytime during the school day. Cell phones usage is only allowed during an emergency. Students are expected to use phones in offices or in classrooms with teacher or administration permission only. The cell phone will be picked up by staff if it is improperly used during the day. Music and Video Players and Gaming Devices All MP3, tape, or cd players and all gaming devices (video game players) are not allowed at school or to be used during the school day. If they are confiscated by a teacher or administration, the parent is required to pick up the device at the grade level office and pay a fee. Students are not allowed to get the device from the office. Materials Each student is expected to bring the following materials to class everyday: valid student I.D. card, pen or pencil, and notebook paper. Materials not brought to class daily will result in a lower daily grade. Absences If the student knows ahead of time that he/she will be absent, he/she should take the initiative to get the work early. When circumstances do not allow student to get the work early, he/she is expected to get the assignments missed the first day back. It will be considered LATE if work is not made up by the school’s policy. The student needs to follow these steps in getting the make-up work: 1. He/she needs to check the previous agenda on board and Table of Contents posted in the room. 2. It is the student’s responsibility to ask me for missing work before class starts or at the end of class. All missed assignments should be made up by the same amount of days the student missed my class. 3. All students need to write “Absence (date)” at the top of the work so no points are taken off that assignment. Late Work Policy I will take late work from students up until the 5th week of the six weeks. The maximum grade a student can earn on any late daily work, quizzes, or test grades will be a 70. It is the student’s responsibility to ask me for their make-up work or to ask in advance if he/she knows of an upcoming absence. Do not wait until the end of the six weeks to get missing work from me! It will automatically be late! New Books and Technology R.R.I.S.D. purchased new health textbooks in 2006. Each student has the opportunity to have a hard copy of a book for them to keep at home. Students who do not have access to the internet at home are required to check out textbooks. I will have a class set so students do not need to bring their books to school. Each student is responsible for keeping up with, respecting, and turning in books on their own at the end of the semester. With the purchase of these new books, we have upgraded technology as well. Round Rock High School health students only are now able to log onto the publisher’s website to access the book online and take quizzes for extra practice: Website Address: http://tx.healthmh.com ID: meekstx Password: zk49wlen Cheating / Plagiarism This semester students will be asked to honestly do daily assignments, take quizzes, tests, write book reflections (journal entries), and conduct a research project. I wanted to take this opportunity to remind everyone what standards the SPHS English Department has set for students during these assigned tasks in health and any other class taken at Stony Point High School. “One requirement of the English curriculum in Texas is that students practice the process of conducting research: gathering information, presenting the information clearly and accurately, and documenting the information properly. In teaching these skills, English teachers must address the issue of plagiarism as a serious matter, making clear to students the consequences of stealing the words and ideas of others, including their peers and those who make their living as writers and researchers. Research papers, journal articles, and book reviews can easily be located on the Internet, and students may be tempted to take short cuts when completing an assignment. It is our obligation to assure that students understand the definition of plagiarism and do not participate in this illegal activity. Instructions and formats for documenting sources of information can be found on the RRISD Website at Academics>Language Arts>Secondary Language Arts>Documentation Guides – High School. Definition of Cheating / Plagiarism Academic Dishonesty in SPHS Student Handbook Copying another person’s work, such as homework, class work, or a test, is a form of cheating. Plagiarism is also a form of cheating. Plagiarism is defined as using another person’s original ideas or writing, without giving credit to the true author, as use of one’s own work. Students guilty of cheating, plagiarism, or other forms of academic dishonesty will be subject to academic and/or administrative disciplinary action that may include loss of credit for the work in question. ***Return this sheet only into Coach Carter as soon as possible.
