ATTENTION PRE-AP STUDENTS:
Dear Teachers, Parents, and Students,
Here at Stony Point Ninth Grade Center, we are getting ready for the 2009-2010
school year, and we can’t wait to greet the SPHS Class of 2013! Some of you
will be involved in the Pre-AP program, and I wanted to take this opportunity
to inform you of our expectations for summer reading.
It is a standard expectation that all incoming Pre-AP students complete this
reading assignment before the first day, and it is strongly recommended that
this book is available for reference when classes begin. If students are
currently enrolled in a Pre-AP class, or if future enrollment is anticipated,
this assignment should not be considered optional. Students will be at a great
disadvantage if this reading is not completed, and it will be very difficult
to try to “catch up.” Additionally, it speaks well of a student’s aptitude for
the Pre-AP program if she or he is ready to go on the first day.
This year, we are increasing our focus on nonfiction. To that end, we are
requiring incoming freshmen in the Pre-AP program to read a long-form
biography (one-hundred-seventy-five or more pages) on a subject of their
choosing. While we encourage parents to be involved with the selection and to
discuss it with their child to help make it a successful reading experience,
we also want the student to make a choice that interests her or him. This will
help us start the year off in a manner that is focused on individual student
interest. Please note the minimum length (175 pages) for, as a Department, we
feel that this minimum will help ensure a sufficiently mature subject.
Autobiographies are acceptable, as well. Please note: the student will be
expected to have her/his book available for a project within the first few
weeks of school. Care should be taken if using a library book, in that the
book should be checked out through the beginning of the school year.
We hope that you enjoy your summer and that you are as excited to be a Tiger
as we are to have you.
See you at Orientation!
Most sincerely,
Miranda Marshall
