ALGEBRA PUZZLES
A varialble is a letter (X, Y, H, or T, etc.) that stands for a number or a range of numbers.
Look at these examples and try to figure out what number the variable stands for. (Hint: The variable will be the same number if it shows up more than once in the problem.)
Examples:
1. T + T = 64 Solution: 8 x 8 = 64, so T = 8
2. H + H = 24 Solution: 12 + 12 = 24, so H = 12
3. Y + 2 = 19 Solution: 17 + 2 = 19, so Y = 17
Now you try some:
1. L + L = 8 , so L = ________
2. H x H = 16, so H = ________
3. T + 1 = 16, so T = ________
4. C + C = 10, so C = ________
5. K - 1 = 13, so K = ________
6. 5 + Y = 6, so Y = ________
7. M x M = 81, so M = ________
8. L - 7 = 9, so L = ________
9. 11 + X = 16, so X = ________
10. E x 8 = 8, so E = ________
