Burdick-Reading

Nov. 18 - Dec, 04 2009

We are not going to manage to finish Hoot before the Thanksgiving break.  The Monday we come back will be review day.  The test will be that Weds. (12/2).  Upon completion of Hoot we will return to several selections in the basal.

Please note: Students should be well into their AR book they will use for the next book report.  This report is an oral presentation and will be due either Dec.9 or 11. They will draw for which day they will present.

Nov. 09 - Nov. 13, 2009

We are moving along quite nicely in Hoot.  There will be a vocabulary quiz this coming Friday.  It will be over the following words:
agitate         dilapidated         fugitive         malevolent       patronizing         rebuke
            salvage               sullen              turbulence      vile
These words were defined on the last two study guides.

Everyone should be reading independently (an AR book) as well - - for the next book report.

Nov. 02 - Nov. 06, 2009

We continue to read HootIn fact, we just finished chapter 14, so we are progressing nicely.

The details for the next book report were handed out in class last week.  The information is also available as a sixth grade document on Teacher Web if the original is misplaced.

Sometime next week there will be another vocabulary quiz.  As of right now I am not sure if it will be Weds. or Fri.  This depends on our in-class reading pace.

Oct. 26 - Oct. 30, 2009

We continue to read Hoot as a class.  Students should also be reading independently for AR points.  They will also get the guidelines for the next book report this week.  Just a comment about this book report:  Students need to really read about a character they like this time.  The book report will be oral, and the students will have to be the main character for the presentation.  Also, while students all really seem to enjoy reading the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, they really do not lend themselves to excellent book reports.  Please feel free to read them for points - - - but not for presentations/book reports.

There will be a quiz this Wednesday over the first 10 vocabulary words for Hoot.  These words are defined on the first two study guides for the book.

 Oct. 12 - Oct. 23, 2009  (TWO WEEKS!)

We are currently reading a novel, Hoot.  There will be ongoing vocabulary study and comprehension questions.  The first seven word for this book will be due Friday, 10/16.  I am also collecting book report projects.  They may be turned in to me any time between now and Friday.

We will do most of the reading in class - together.

Please don't forget that by Friday, October 23rd, all students should have at least 7 AR points.

Oct. 5 - Oct. 9, 2009

I hope everyone is well into the novel they will use for their book report.  Many have already taken their AR quizzes.  Way to Go! Please remember that these are due in class on October 16th.

This week we will be wrapping up our unit about courage.  We will be reading two shorter selections in class.  As well as discussing each on its own merits, we will also be involved with some compare/contrast activities.

Monday morning the students had a brief vocabulary assignment.  Most of them finished in class.  If they did not, it is due when they return to reading on Wednesday.

Quick Reminder:  At the end of the grading period (10/23), each student should have earned a minimum of 7 AR points.  This does count as a major grade.

Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2009

Once again, it is a BLUE week.  This means we meet on Wednesday and Friday.

I hope everyone is well into the novel they will use for their book report.  Many have already taken their AR quizzes.  Way to Go! Please remember that these are due in class on October 16th. I will hand out the paper for the project this Friday (10/2).

This week (in class) we will be reading and discussing "Alone Against the Sea".  I have had a lot of really positive feedback from the students about our reading selections thus far. We will also be discussing some current events in class Friday, as we use our Time for Kids subscription.

Sept. 21-25, 2009

It is a BLUE week.  This means that we will only meet for reading on Weds. and Fri. of this week.

Hopefully, EVERYONE is reading an AR book for their first book report by now.  That Book Report is to be turned in October 16th.

This week we will read and discuss "The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle".  Please note that the most common mistakes occurring in written assignments are the most basic of writing instruction:
  •       Failure to start sentences with a capital letter.
  •       Failure to use punctuation at the end of a sentence.

I do take points off for these mistakes.  Sixth grade students have been writing too long to make these types of errors.

Sept. 14 - 18, 2009

It is a WHITE week, and that means our class will meet three times (M-W-F).

On Monday I will hand out the directions and expectations page for the first book report.  The project will be due October 16th.  If the sheet gets lost you may print out another copy via the downloadables section for Teacher Web - Grade 6.

This week we will continue our study of courage.  Our story is quite adventurous.  It is called "Climb or Die".  We will read and discuss the story in class.  We will spend some extra time studying vocabulary, practicing dictionary skills, and writing complex sentences.

Friday is an early dismissal day; however, we will still have our reading class that morning.

Sept. 7 - 11, 2009

Monday is a holiday.  :o)

Are you reading an AR book?  You should be.  Please let me know if you need assistance in selecting a book.  One of the students in this class already has 42 points!

This week we will continue our focus on courage.  We will be reading "Passage to Freedom" in class.  Our fucus will be on making evaluations and judgements.

Aug. 31 - Sept. 4, 2009

Monday - We will finish reading Hatchet.  Students will work with a partner in doing so.  Mrs. Burdick will circulate through the room so she has the opportunity to hear everyone read.  There is a written assignment that must be completed by our next class - - Wednesday after chapel.

Next week Mrs. Brown will take you to the library.  If you do not currently have a book from a class library to read, you may want to get one.  Remember:  Everyone should have at least 7 points by the end of the first 9 weeks.

We will be looking at real-life stories of courage the rest of this week.  Listen to the news and see if you have a story you would like to share. There should not be any homework related to these studies.
