King- Texas History

Week 12  (November 9-13) - We completed Chapter 9 today.  Students have been working on reading the text and gathering important data for their notes.  We have two guest speakers scheduled for next week - the kids will enjoy the change of "scenery".  There will be no formal assessment on Chapter 9.  We will be working on a in-class project next week to summarize the information from the chapter and our guest speakers.

November 3, 2009 - Chapter 7-8 Assessment is tomorrow!  The students have had two full days of review as of today.  We will be slowly introducing Chapter 9 with an image slide of the early days of the Texas Revolution - book work will begin on Chapter 9 next week on Monday.  We will have two guest speakers coming during chapters 9-11.

October 26 - Again, I apologize for the lapse in posting on TeacherWeb.
We completed Chapter 7 last week.  It was a short chapter so we will be combining it with Chapter 8 for an assessment.  Students worked on an advertisement project as "Empresarios" last week and presented them today in class.  We started reading Chapter 8 (with Assessment 8.1 #1-2 assigned) after the presentations.  Our week ahead:

8.2 - Read as a class; TAKS questions from 8.1 and 8.2 with discussion; Assessment 8.2 #1-2; Vocabulary worksheet on 8.1 and 8.2

8.3 - Read independently and complete Guided Reading for 8.3 as assessment.

I will update for Thursday later - if this week goes well ... and students work hard during class ... we will most likely watch a movie on the Alamo on Thursday.

Look for Chapter 7-8 test early next week.

September 28 -
Chapter 5-1 worksheet for homework.

September 27 - Trading Cards due tomorrow.  Chapter 4 Quiz tomorrow on the the explorers we've been studying.  Cards can be used on the quiz, so DON'T FORGET THEM

We will begin Chapter 5 on Tuesday.  Look for new updates as we get started with the chapter.  There will not be an assessment for Chapter 5.  The assessment will be at the end of Chapter 6 and cover both chapters.  A little ways away ... just a heads up.

September 23 - We began working on our Trading Cards for the explorers in Chapter 4.  Students were given an assignment sheet detailing the project.  They will be working on these in class for the remainder of this week.  Cards will be due on Monday and can be used on their chapter assessment quiz.

September 22 -
The students have done a great job being attentive and following along in class this week as we've acquired quite a bit of information on the explorers in Texas History.  I hope this has a positive impact on our assessment for Chapter 4!

September 18 -
We will begin Chapter 4 today in Texas History.  Students will be completing a trading card project on the explorers we are covering.  Please encourage students to review and study the information from their notes and their trading cards throughout next week (Week 5).

Texas History grades have been suffering for many students due to lack of preparation and study effort.  Your student should be studying his/her notes about every other day at home.  This should keep the information fresh and organized for them.  If done regularly, it shouldn't take more than 20-30 minutes.

Textbooks ARE available for check out anytime in my room.  The books must be brought back to school on a daily basis with me.  If your student checks a book out and fails to bring it to class with them the next day, our class set will be low.  If it persists, they will no longer be able to check textbooks out with me.

September 15 -
Exams are coming home tonight and should be corrected by the students.  Their grade on the corrections will be averaged with their initial grade for a final grade.  They may use their notes and/or the text to make corrections but should be working independently.  DUE THURSDAY - no late corrections will be accepted.

Our Chapter 3 quiz will be on Thursday.  The students have received several worksheets and packets of notes that have been gone over in class since last Thursday.  Please encourage students to review these as well as their section reviews from the textbook.

We are working on Chapter 3.  Students have homework (Guided Reading Worksheet front page)  due Monday.  Expect a quiz over Natives in Texas midweek - Wednesday or Thursday.

Students will have the opportunity to rewrite their essay questions from Unit 1 Exam this week in class.  These rewrites will be evaluated for additional points on the exam.

September 3 - We have completed the first two chapters of our Texas History texts and will begin a review over our introduction to Texas History tomorrow and continue it on Tuesday.
Students should plan on an exam next Wednesday, September 9th.

Welcome to Texas History
with Mrs. King!

We have had a great first week of school.  If your student is in my Texas History class, then that means that they are in my English Language Arts and Reading class and my homeroom.  This offers us a great opportunity to really get to know each other throughout the upcoming school year.

In an effort to maintain continuity, Mr. Brandon and I will be staying on topic together as  much as possible.  Hopefully, this will help the students stay organized!  Our Texas History textbooks will be used as a class set this year.  If your student needs to have a book to study, they will be able to check one out the week of the exams.  However, they should not need one if they take good notes in class and keep their binders in order with handouts and returned work!
