Nov. 17 - Dec. 04, 2009
We are delving into and improving our skills with reference sources. Using the dictionary, atlas, and almanac will all be emphasized and practiced in class.
Nov. 09 - Nov. 13, 2009
Tuesday we will finish working on taking lecture notes. This section has been a lot of fun, and the students have all been excellent participants in class.
Thursday we will start to work with "A World of Reference Materials." This unit should be especially useful for their research papers later on this year.
Nov. 02 - Nov. 06, 2009
The students finished their in class work with taking notes from textbooks using the SQRW method. They seemed to do a really good job of putting the concept into practice.
This week we will work with taking notes from lecture. The students will learn how to listen for cue words, abbreviate, and take notes that will make sense later - - - when it is time to understand the notes you took.
Oct.26 - Oct. 30, 2009
We will wrap up using the SQRW method this week. Ask your child about this study technique. There will be a brief quiz Thursday over this note-taking technique. Next, we will discuss/practice taking notes from oral presentations and/or lectures.
Oct.19 - Oct. 23, 2009
This week we start looking at and practicing "Taking Notes from Textbooks." There may be some light homework Tues. or Thursday evening. It just depends how much we get finished in class. We will be using the Texas Historytextbook.
Oct.12 - Oct. 16, 2009
No class - Outdoor Education
Oct.5 - Oct. 9, 2009
This week we will complete our unit on graphic aids. Last Thursday the students created some resources on their own in class. There was a combination of diagrams and bar graphs. Overall, they did a really nice job.
Next week we will not have class because the students in 7th and 8th grades will all be at Outdoor Education. I will praying for nice weather.
Sept. 28 - Oct. 2, 2009
This week we will be using many types of graphic aids. This will include a wide variety of charts, graphs, diagrams, and maps. Students will read, interpret, and create. If anyone has homework this week, it will only be because of an absence or failure to complete an in-class assignment.
Sept. 21 - 25, 2009
We will be wrapping-up the eight strategies in class on Monday. We will spend Tuesday reviewing and identifying examples of the strategies. Thursday we will have a test over the strategies.
Everyone should do very well.
Sept. 14 - 18, 2009
We are learning about the 8 strategies to use when trying to remember information. Since we only meet 2 times this week, my goal is simply to finish going through these 8. The students are required to take notes in class. Please, ask your child to show you his/her notes. There will be a test over this information next Thursday (9/24).
Sept. 7 - 11, 2009
Monday - No School!
Tuesday: We will evaluate and discuss ways to improve study locations and habits.
Thursday: Our focus will shift to 8 strategies that will assist students in remembering information. Today's emphasis will be on Strategy 1 - Visualization.
