Welcome to 8th Grade Science

Eighth grade science is an integrated chemistry and physics class. Students will need to have a calculator for the class, as there is a lot of math involved in the class.

August 26-28

Wednesday - Brief overview of procedures

Thursday - Get books -do assignment related to text book

Friday - Go over class rules and safety rules

September 7 - 11

Monday - Labor Day

Tuesday - Completion of lab on water drops on a penny. Using different variables and predicting the outcome.

Wednesday - Go over the difference between dependent and independent variables in an experiment. Get 10 different scenarios to find the different variables.

Thursday - lab on Candles in a jar. Students decide on their problem to solve and the variables. They also must decide on what needs to be controlled in the lab.

Friday - Completion of the candles in the jar lab.

September 14 -18

Monday - Completion of the bubble lab where students must design their own problem to solve using bubbles

Tuesday - Completion of the writting of the lab and the graphs.

Wednesday - Communicating data orally. Using a mystery scenario students need to communicate clues and solve the mystery.

Thursday - Test on scientific method, safety, and metrics.

Friday - Start of chapter 2. doing the vocabulary for the unit.

September 21-25

Monday - Notes on matter

Tuesday - Mystery mass, by using the mass of one penny they must determine how many pennies are in a film canister.

Wednesday - Identify the difference between mass and weight of different objects and graph the results

Thursday - Complete the graphs for each of the previous mass labs. Discussion of density (mass/volume)

Friday - Lab on the density of five different kinds of balls.

September 28 -October 2

Monday - Density problems (20) calculators needed.

Tuesday - Density of 8 different balls - finding the volume and mass of 8 different balls and predicting whether of not they will float or sink in water.

Wednesday - Continuation of the density of ball lab.

Thursday - Lab on density of solids and liquids

Friday - Completion of lab on the density of solids and liquids.

October 5 - 9

Monday - Density test

Tuesday - Review of chemical and physical properties

Wednesday - Completion of the matter paragraph. Identifying chemical and physical changes and properties.

Thursday - Lab on chemical changes. Hydrogen peroxide and liver and the chemical reaction that takes place

Friday - Completion of lab and graphs

October 26 - 30

Monday - 20 questions on the states of matter

Tuesday - Notes on the states of matter

Wednesday - Lab on the conservation of mass and lab on the effects of temperature on gas.

Thursday - completion of labs

Friday - teacher conferences

Nov. 2 - 6

Monday - Continuation  of change of state lab and questions

Tuesday - What causes the water to rise? Write a paragraph to explain the rise of water in a test tube.

Wednesday - Pressure lab "Imploding Cans"

Thursday - Gas laws - problems on Charles' and Boyle's laws

Friday -  Continuation and completion of the gas law sample problems.
