| "Work is what we do for others...art is what we do for ourselves." - Steven
Sondheim, from "Sunday in the Park with George"
Here's some important information that I hope you will find useful. If I
missed something don't hesitate to contact me with a question- hopefully
I'll have your answer.
For the 2008 Fall Semester I will be teaching on Mondays and Tuesdays
(with make-up times available on Wednesday and Friday afternoons) in Rm.
340.
Cell phone: (This information is located on the Studio Members Only page.
You must have the password to view this page.) I used to be one of the few
surviving members of a long forgotten cult that does not turn on their cell
phones unless they are bleeding to death on the side of the road or are too
tired to cook and are ordering Chinese take-out on the way home. I have
gotten much better about using my cell phone and this is now a good way to
contact me in case of an emergency- especially on lesson days- so go ahead
and use this as a way of getting a hold of me if you need to. FYI- I do not
have a University extension in my office.
Here are some very valuable resources in case you need repair work or a
rehair while in the Alamo City:
Mr. Abbas Selgi: Abbas is a wonderful violin repairman. He does beautiful
work and he is an extremely nice human being. He just recently opened up his
own shop called Terra Nova Violins. The shop is located near North Star Mall
at 6983 Blanco Road. The phone number there is 349-4700. Many of my private
students go to Abbas for their repairs as well as many of my SA Symphony
colleagues and their students. Be sure to tell him you are one of my students
if you ever need his services.
You can also go to a shop in town called Antonio Strad Violin.
They are located on San Pedro Ave. near the airport. Their phone number is
349-9788. The proprietors are Mary and Golian Long. They are also extremely
nice people, the shop does very nice repair work, and they also know me very
well so be sure to tell them that you are my student if you visit their
establishment.
If you need strings or other supplies you can find them at Terra Nova or
Antonio Strad. There are also several very good online companies like Shar,
Southwest Strings, and Concord Music Supply. All offer the best supplies at a
deep discount. If you don’t already use these businesses you will find links
to their websites under "Reference Links". Catalogs are also available at my
studio.
Ms. Faith DeBow is our studio accompanist and at some point or another all
of you will have occasion to work with her. You will be responsible for
setting up your rehearsals with her. If you can schedule some of your
rehearsals during your lesson times that would be great. Faith can be
reached at:
fdebow@hotmail.com.
More information about Faith’s available rehearsal and performance times can
be found on our bulletin board inside the studio.
There are several excellent sources in San Antonio for quality classical
musical events: the San Antonio Symphony, San Antonio Lyric Opera, Chamber
Music Society, Musical Offerings, Tuesday Musical Club, Musical Bridges,
Camerata San Antonio, Cactus Pear Festival (summer only), and the Olmos
Ensemble to name but a few. I believe that all offer tickets at very reduced
rates to students with IDs. Some are even free. I encourage you to take
advantage of these wonderful resources. You will find many of the official
web pages for these organizations on the "Reference Links" page.
I’m looking forward to a great year with all of you. I hope that you will
find your musical studies at TU worthwhile and, most importantly, that you
will feel good about what you are doing and have fun in the process! And,
unless you are stuck on formalities, please feel free to call me Craig. If
you ever refer to me as a “Professor” I will just laugh (you veterans know
how much that idea amuses me). Now, finish exploring the website so you can
go and practice!
Craig
