Course Literature

There are no required readings for this course. Music Education students are
encouraged to explore the many string education related resources that can
be found in the Coates Library. Books by Leopold Auer, Leopold Mozart, Carl
Flesch, Ivan Galamian, and others are readily available and loaded with
invaluable information that will serve you well in your future careers. We
also have a CD-ROM set produced by one of the great violin teachers of the
present day, Mimi Zweig (University of Indiana School of Music-Bloomington,
teacher of Joshua Bell). You can also check out master violin teacher Kurt
Sassmanshaus' excellent website, www.violinmasterclass.com, for more
wonderful insights into violin teaching and playing. Additionally you may
view a DVD by Gerald Fischbach titled "The Art of Vibrato" as well as the
videos of violin virtuoso Jascha Heifetz's famous master classes. The
University also has a subscription to Strad Magazine- highly recommended!
And, of course, there's also the studio's own Recording Library. All students
are encouraged to take advantage of the many fine recordings available in our
University Library but when they don't have the time to search the stacks
they can always listen to thousands of complete works online via the Naxos
Classical Recording library on our University's web page (if you don't know
how to access it ask me). This is just a sampling of the resources available
to you. All of these resources are also recommended for even the casual
violin student who is looking for insights into improving their technique.
Happy viewing, listening, and reading!
