**February 3rd is the 100th day of school!!!  All of the kindergarten classes will be celebrating the 100th day by rotating to different classrooms to participate in different activities.  We invite students to wear a shirt decorated with 100 items on them to help celebrate this kindergarten milestone.  Get creative!!  (googly eyes, dots, stamps, bows...)

*We no longer are having rest time in the classroom.  Students do not need to bring a towel with them to school.*

*If you have any old toys that you would like to donate to your child's classroom treasure box please feel free to send those to school with your child.  We would greatly appreciate it!!*

*Our class Valentine's Party will be taking place the afternoon of February 12th.  More information will be coming home in the next few weeks in your child's folder.*

This past week in math played a game called "I Have, Who Has?"  This game allowed students the opportunity to practice identifying numbers 0-30.  We also incorporated our study of Winter and did two math activities involving mittens.  We estimated and checked to see how many objects would fit inside a mitten.  We also designed a set of mittens so that they were symmetrical to each other.  Then students participated in a game where the mittens were split up and students were instructed to find the matching mitten.  Then we discussed the attributes of each pairs mitten and how they found their matching mitten.

In science, we studied "Winter and Seasonal Change".  We conducted different hands on science experiments involving ice.  We tested what would happen to colored ice when it melts, where ice would melt the fastest, and if yarn would be able to pick up an ice cube when salt is sprinkled on it.  Students were able to hypothesize, observe, and find results after each experiment.

In writing, students have been practicing our "Star Writer" rules.  Students are working on writing with spaces, using lowercase letters, using word wall words, and listening for sounds in their writing.  We also have been discussing good word choice.  Each class created a list of different "Sparkle Words" that students will be able to use in their stories.

We have introduced the skill of beginning deletion in words.  This skill allows students to figure out what the word is when the first sound is taken away.  You can begin practicing this skill at home.  Tell your child a word such as cat, then ask them to take away the beginning sound and the word would become at.  We also reviewed the high frequency words us, has, and am.  We also have begun learning about digraphs.  Students have been introduced to the new sounds of /sh/, /ch/, and /th/.   Please continue to practice writing letters correctly and identifying their sounds.

In shared reading we reading different fairy tales.  With each story we have discussed different elements such as main idea, character, and setting.

**Please make sure that your child has a change of clothes in their backpack everyday.  The nurse does not have clothes for students.  If a child has an accident the child's parent will be called to bring an extra set for them.  Your child's daily folder is coming home each day.  Please return this folder daily.  If you have something you need for your child's teacher to see please place it in the daily folder.**
