Willkommen, bienvenue, bienvenidos....welcome! I am Andrew Ortiz Jr, and I
teach 7th grade language arts at Walsh Middle School. This is my fourteenth
year in education and my second year in RRISD. I recently relocated from
Charlotte, NC, where I taught 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. Prior to that, I
taught 5th grade at Forest Creek Elementary in Round Rock. In addition to
language arts, I have taught sixth grade Spanish and French, math, and
science. I hold two degrees from the University of Texas at Austin: a B.A. in
sociology and a B.S. in applied learning and development. (Hook'em Horns!) In
2004, I earned my National Board Certification in language arts for early
adolescence. I am currently working on my master's degree in secondary
education. I hope to bring a well-rounded approach to your child's learning
experience.
Because my father was in the military, I grew up in various areas of the
country and world, including six years in Germany, seven years in Maryland,
and thirteen years in Texas. My hobbies include tennis, traveling, working
out, reading, learning new things, and listening to music.
Working with adolescents requires patience, understanding, and a good sense
of humor. I firmly believe that these elements help create a respectful and
productive environment. I also believe in the 3Rs of education: rigor,
relevance and relationship. I strive to challenge my students, help them
make real-world connections and build meaningful and productive relationships
with each one.
