Westwood Running Club

Welcome!

Announcements

A New Running Club will begin in the fall of 08'. Please reference your fall Community Education brochure for more information.

Forms and money need to be turned in to the Community Education Office at the administration building.

BALES also hosts a running club. Don't miss it!

What is Running Club

Running Club is for 3rd graders at Westwood. Students learn about warming up, stretching, sprinting, longer runs, and a healthy lifestyle in a very fun and safe character oriented atmosphere.

What We Do in Running Club

After role, announcements, and stretching (students are chosen to lead small stretching groups) we typically run laps for 10 minutes. The laps are recorded. One of our running teachers runs along with the students to push them along and add excitement.

We then play games for the remainder of the time. Some games include various forms of tag, everybodies it, and relays. We also play games with themes like Harry Potter or space. The games are the favorite activities.

Dismissal then takes place with each student informing us who they are riding home with. Students are not allowed to walk home.

Running Club Discipline Plan

Student safety is our first priority. With a much larger group this semester, it is imperative that students behave just as they would during school hours. If a student receives two strike sheets during the semester, they will be asked to leave the club.

Strikes will occur for failing to follow school rules. Strikes will also occur if the parent is unable to consistently pick up their child on time.

We appreciate your cooperation in helping to make this a successful and safe club.

Volunteers

The running club regularly utilizes parent volunteers. There is no running required. Parent would assist with attendance, materials, and monitoring. Please email us if you are a parent interested in volunteerring.

Checklist for your Runner

1) We will not be changing clothes, so be sure to wear comfortable running clothes and shoes on Monday.

2) Bring a water bottle. Hydrating oneself is encouraged and necessary.

3) Meet in the gym after dismissal sitting in your designated spot.

4) IF IT RAINS, WE STILL HAVE RUNNING CLUB IN THE GYM.

5) Bring any proof of races ran for credit.

Encouraging your Runner

1) Running club members that run in local 5K races or other athletic events are given extra laps on their lap cards. These laps are traded in for rewards. Please have your runner wear the t-shirt they received or have them bring some proof of the race in order to receive credit.

2) We will hopefully be announcing a parent running day where you can come and run or walk with your child. We encourage you to run whenever you can with your child.

3) Watch running events. Watch the Houston or New York Marathon with your child on TV. Tune in to triathalons and other running related sports to encourage them.

4) Talk to them about stretching, eating right for being healthy, proper running shoes, etc.

5) Tell your child what a great job they are doing. Make it FUN!!
