How do I teach math?
All about second grade math!
You might just be thinking, so, she teaches my child to read in a small
group, based on his individual level, so what about math?
Well, the answer is, I teach small group math too! Your child will
participate in small math groups in addition to the whole class math skills
lessons presented.
How do I achieve this? We will group students with similar abilities and
needs after pre-testing each unit we teach. Just as in reading, math groups
are formed according to your child’s individual needs, on a particular
skill. The groups can change frequently, depending on your child’s strength
in certain areas. At times, students are also involved in math
workstations, where they practice skills I have previously taught them and
learn some new things too. These work stations are engaging and fun, and
allow me to work with small groups of children on math skills.
Well, you say, what if my child really excels in math? The answer is easy!
With needs-based grouping and small group instruction, I can challenge
children and dig deeper into a math skill to teach her something new and keep
her excited about math!
I have learned that students thrive in this setting, learning more things
than I ever thought possible!
The most important thing you can do to help your child excel in math is
reinforce the skills they are learning in class. Help them use their math
skills in real-world situations. Always ask them how they get their answers
also. Knowing how you get an answer is as important,if not more important
than getting the correct answer.
Also, in second grade, students should be able to quickly and accurately
recall math facts. Quiz your student on his/her math facts. Use flashcard,
computer games, or even just calling out addition and subtraction problems to
your child while you are driving in the car!
