January 4-8
I hope that each of your families had a wonderful holiday break. I know that all of us needed that
family time together. As we get back in the swing for the most important part of the year, please
help your child get back into the reminder stage. Many were forgetting organizers, conduct sheets,
library books and journals. Please help them back into the routine of second grade.
Reading- We will be diving deep into context clues and how to use tools to help us understand them
in our reading. We will go over difficult vocabulary and how do we decide what they mean using
other words and phrases in the paragraph.
Our leveled reading groups are going well. I have 6 reading groups to read with each week. I try to
get to the everyday or every other. This really depends if our day isn't interrupted. I am so proud of
each of the students hearing their reading already improving. I love to hear the voice in each of their
voice.
Science-We will be understanding animals and categorizing each.
Please read your child's journal each weekend. We will be writing in those on Friday. They should
take them home on Friday. Please read what they wrote, and write them back. These should be
returned on Monday with their Friday folder. ( Please make sure you are writing to your child over
the weekend. It can be short and sweet if you need it to be.
Writing Workshop-We will be writing about topics of interest. We will be reading about different
prove-it points and what they mean. We will challenge students to look closely for leads in stories
and does it hook the reader's attention? We will write about a memorable time they spent with a
sibling, cousin, or friend.
Language- Synonyms and Antonyms
Spelling-Change y to i and add a suffix
We will write the list on Monday, illustrate a poem on it, magnetic letters, folder activity
over words, pretest and then post test over the words with partners. We will have a spelling test this
week and dictation test next week.
Math-We are review and continue chapter 9 on addition . We will need practice on this at home.
DEAR-. This will be on Friday afternoon. They will Drop Everything And Read. We will lay
on the ground and enjoy reading a good book.
Remember that your child needs to read a minimum of 60 minutes a week. You need to write down
the times each time they read. Points will be deducted for each minute not read each week. The
students are bringing home their leveled books 3 to 4 times a week. Please remember that these
count as well. Anytime read at home counts. This should always be an easy 100 for the kids.
Reminders:
I was in hopes that a parent that came to the party will help me with something that was miss placed.
They PTO gave each of us a gift cert. from Target on Thursday right before the party. I placed it on
the reading table where we serve food. I was just wondering if anyone placed it aside while we were
getting things ready and I just can't locate it? I was so hoping that it didn't blend in with all the nice
decorations and get thrown away. If you maybe know of its where abouts, I would love to locate it.
Thanks in advance for that.
All December Dear Calendars are due on Wed. I hope that many of us set or met our goals.
Continue to bring in those box tops. We were the winners last month. I have my whole family
collecting for us as well.
Return all library books by Wednesday so that we can check out more.
A reminder to check over supplies that come home daily to get checked. WE really want to regroup
after all of the holidays and start really working hard.
I will try to update this as new things appear. Thanks for being such a special part of your child's
life. Being a partner with you, is the real reason for success. Have a great week.
Sincerely,
Tammy Kaufhold
