PTO Committee Chairs
Westwood PTO Minutes Meeting Date: September 4, 2009
The meeting took place in the cafeteria and was called to order at 9:07 a.m. by PTO Co-Chair, Charlotte Hall. She welcomed everyone to the new school year and introduced the 2009-2010 Board Members.
Superintendent’s Report: Ms. Hanks announced that F.I.S.D. is a TEA Exemplary District since every campus in FISD received Exemplary status for the 2008-2009 school year. Ms. Hanks told us about many awards won this past year for the Athletic Program, Band, 4A Academic Contest, and National School of Character. Records were set for money raised at Round-Up. Ms. Hanks also informed us of concerns regarding liquid heroin. Due to this, new rules banning liquid eye drops & liquids (water bottles) are in effect at FJH and FHS. FISD teachers received a 2% cost of living salary increase for the 2009-2010 year.
Principal’s Report: Lynn Hobratschk is excited the new school year is off to a great start. She informed us of a few teacher changes made this year. She gave a report of money raised during the 2009-2010 school year and how those funds were used. She thanked PTO for helping Westwood move forward.
Counselor’s Report: Barbara Gruener conducted a quick personality quiz with meeting attendees. She informed everyone that Westwood Elementary was named a National School of Character. She stressed the importance of all of us focusing on the whole child and keeping things firm, fair and consistent.
Secretary’s Report: A motion was made by Beth Stanfield and seconded by Kari Gwaltney to accept the minutes from the May 2009 meeting.
Treasurer’s Report:
School Supplies Report: Nancy Glaze and Pam DeMarco announced that the School Supplies made $1902.36. They explained that a paper fee would be collected from the students who didn’t order supplies from the school. They both thanked all volunteers that helped sort and distribute supplies.
Hospitality Report: Dawn Barta told us that the first Teacher Luncheon was held on August 13, 2009. Lunch was provided from The Charleston Tea Room. Door Prizes were given away. All teachers were given a gift certificate at the luncheon. There are 3 remaining luncheons for the year.
Spirit Committee Report: Tiffany Shavlan told us every Friday will be Spirit Day. She unveiled the new t-shirt design. Other new spirit items include hoodies, shorts, visors, and caps. She asked for volunteers to help pass out items that have been pre-ordered.
Donuts with Dudes Report: Michele Klump and Michelle Buisson will be co-chairing this year’s event. Michele Klump informed us that the dates of Donuts with Dudes will be Tuesday, October 6 - Friday, October 9, 2009.
Volunteers Report: Donna Gilbreath told everyone that all forms turned in will be passed out today to the committee chairs.
Box Tops Report: Committee Chair not present. The first deadline for Box Tops will be September 18, 2009.
Room Parents Report: Pam DeMarco informed everyone that this year all parties will be on Thursdays. The Room Parent Meeting will be held on Friday, September 11, 2009 in the cafeteria.
Directory/Membership Report: Michelle Buisson reminded everyone that the deadline for the Directory Art Contest is Oct. 1st. The 1st prize drawing will be displayed on the cover of the directory. The 2nd and 3rd prize drawings will be displayed inside the directory. She also reminded everyone about sponsorship ads.
Store Promotions Report: Committee Chair not present, but will be chaired by Shelly Sherer this year. This year we will have a Pizza Family Night once a month with Papa John’s Pizza. Westwood Elementary earns 20% of sales on that night. She is also working on a Westwood Subway sandwich card.
Fundraising Report: Carrie Keathley, Traci DiVirgilio and Kari Gwaltney told us that this year’s fundraiser will be children’s tile art. Students will work on their self portrait during art classes. The tiles will be displayed inside the school. Forms will go home sometime during the fall.
Round-Up Report: Dawn Barta will be the Round-Up Chair this year. This year’s Round-Up will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010. The focus of Round-Up is fun for the kids. During October, Dawn will ask the faculty to start working on a wish list to be given to Round-Up committees. Everyone needs to be involved in order to make this a successful event.
Skate Night Report: Kerry Harris passed around volunteer sign up sheets. She reminded everyone that the dates of Skate Night will be Mon, Sept. 14, 2009 for Kinder; Thurs, Sept 18,2009 for 1st Gr; Mon., Sept. 21, 2009 for 2nd Gr; and Thurs., Sept. 24, 2009 for 3rd Gr.

Charlotte Hall thanked everyone for attending and the meeting was adjourned at 10:17 a.m.
