All about first grade math! 
 
You might just be thinking, so, she teaches my child to read in a small group, based on his individual level, so what about math? 
 
Well, the answer is, I teach small group math too!  Your child will participate in at least 2 intensive small math groups with direct instruction from me per week in addition to the mini lessons I teach to the entire class. 
 
How do I achieve this?  Students are involved in math workstations, where they practice skills I have previously taught them and learn some new things too.  These work stations are engaging and fun, and allow me to work with small groups of children on math skills. 
 
Just as in reading, math groups are formed according to your child’s individual needs, on a particular skill.  The groups can change frequently, depending on your child’s strength in certain areas. 
 
Small math groups allow your child to have more “face time” with the teacher, and I am able to correct errors or misunderstandings much easier. 
 
There is still not a ton of written work done in math, but when I do assign it, I might make notes on your child’s paper.  My comments may let you know that your child needed extra help with an assignment. 
 
Well, you say, what if my child really excels in math?  The answer is easy!  With small group instruction, I can challenge children and dig deeper into a math skill to teach her something new and keep her excited about math! 
 
I have learned that students thrive in this setting, learning more things than I ever thought possible!
